Hello, friends! My name is J.J.

―J.J's usual intro

John James "J. J." McCullough (born: July 17, 1984 (1984-07-17) [age 40])[1][2] is a Canadian journalist, author, and political and social commentary YouTuber who makes educational and commentary videos about various topics relating to Canada, facts about history, the cultures of different countries, and sometimes Canadian politics. He lives in Vancouver.

Most of his videos are around 20-30 minutes, and most of the videos have good responses. He sometimes does travel videos and has visited several countries during the life of his channel. He claims he tries to make his videos have a "timeless" quality, though he also sometimes makes videos about current events, such as elections.

Most of the thumbnails show his face with a reaction with large text and colorful background. His videos often feature his own cartoon drawings.

Personal life[]

J.J. is of Dutch, Scotch-Irish, Italian, and French descent. His mother was a Dutch immigrant. His surname is of Scottish origin. J.J. has a degree in political science and worked for one year as an English teacher in Japan but did not like the experience.

J.J. was born in what he calls a “comfortable” middle class family, and says it could’ve even been "upper middle class." His mother was a high school teacher and his father was a bureaucrat for the Canadian government. They had two children, J.J. and his younger sister. In his childhood he lived in a suburban house in Vancouver with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. He has made several videos discussing the ideology of the middle class which he suggests involves various themes of materialism and anxiety.

J.J. is openly gay,[3][4] and has mentioned his sexuality in many of his videos. He has said he is single when asked on livestreams. In one video he referred to having a wife (or ex-wife) but this was probably a joke. [5]

Channel in-jokes[]

A running joke on his channel is the fact that J.J. often refers to his previous videos as being "award-winning," then quickly has a graphic that pops up on screen saying "not award-winning" (or something like that) in small letters for a split second.

He often uses the name "Chip Dipson" or "Dip Dopson" for generic people.

Political beliefs[]

Before making YouTube videos, J.J. worked as a political commentator on Canadian TV and in print. He still writes a weekly column about Canadian politics for the Washington Post.

He describes himself as broadly conservative, and prefers former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper over Justin Trudeau. He does not like Donald Trump and has said critical things about the modern Republican Party in his columns, and sometimes in his videos. Though he overall does not often talk about his political opinions that much in his videos, and says that his channel is "not a political channel," he does sometimes express strong opinions on specific Canada-related topics.

He is quite opposed to any special treatment from the Canadian government towards the province of Quebec, and opposes official French-English bilingualism. He has also strongly criticized the Quebec government and was once denounced by their parliament after a column he wrote for the Post in the wake of the 2017 Quebec Mosque Shooting[6]. He has also been a critic of the status the British monarchy has in Canada and aspects of the Canadian political system. He is a strong supporter of closer US-Canada ties and sometimes jokes about wanting to merge Canada and the USA into one because he thinks they are the two best countries.

Bill C-10 & Bill C-11[]

In 2020 he began a campaign against Bill C-10, which later became Bill C-11. This was a bill that would give the Canadian government the power to change streaming media sites like you Tube, changing the explore tabs, recommendations, etc. on the Canadian version of the site with the goal of steering Canadian users towards more pro-Canada or patriotic videos made by Canadian users in order to improve Canadian culture.[7][8] He once speculated that Canadian YouTube users could possibly be forced to be subscribe to channels such as CBC[9] Even though he's claimed that he might benefit from this new system, given he is a Canadian who often makes video about Canada,[10] he has still opposed the bill on the grounds that the government should not tell people what to watch or determine any creator's success.[11] He encouraged viewers to send messages to the Prime Minister and Heritage Minister[12] along with contacting the NDP as stated in the video and description. He has also wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post about his opposition to the plan.[13]

He later did another video that was a explanation video directed at a video by "Friends of Canadian Broadcasting" regarding Bill C-10.[14] Almost a year later, he also opposed the C-11 bill in Canada similar to Bill C-10, and he spoke at the Canadian Parliament as the witness called by the Conservative Party of Canada.[15][16] He also explained the various interest groups that showed up at the meeting.[17] He was asked questions at the meeting from members of parliament who support and oppose the bill.[18] He also mentioned that CBC being supported by the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting as an "anti-American faction".[19] The video also mentioned the groups in the videos with their names.[20]

He has commented on other YouTube videos that revolve around the bill such as videos by Greg Doucette,[21] More Plates More Dates,[22], SomeOrdinaryGamers,[23] etc. He also made a video that combined the various videos from various YouTubers about the bill.[24]

He also made an updated video about ways people can help defeat the bill despite passing the House of Commons while explaining some of the parliamentary process,[25] and he recognizes himself as people seeing him as the leader of the movement to stop Bill C-11 from passing.[26]

He also sat down with "This is Vancolour" with Mo Amir to discuss about the effects of the bill which was uploaded to the channel[27] along with other podcast websites.[28]

He also did a quick text on screen with scrolling content about encouraging people to stop Bill C-11 on an unrelated video.[29]

He made a public appearance in Toronto where he spoke out against the bill.[30]

He went to the Canadian Senate to speak out against the bill,[31] and he described the various compromises that he is willing to make revolving the bill.

He also went to Pierre Poilievre's office, and one of the questions asked was about Bill C-11. Pierre mentioned that he was against the bill.[32]

J.J. McCullough spoke with the CRTC after the Bill C-11 passed.[33] He has posted a video regarding Bill C-11 that shows that the bill is still in the bureaucratic implementation stages and might not be implemented because Justin Trudeau will be voted out of power in the 2025 election before it fully goes into effect.[34][35]

Relations With Other YouTubers[]

J.J. has had interactions with very many different YouTubers including many YouTubers from his native Canada. He often reads lines for other YouTubers in their videos or gets them to read lines in his videos.

J.J. has done a response video towards Quebec YouTuber Thomas Gauthier since he did a response video about the importance of French in Canada. Thomas Gauthier has done a response video back at J.J., and Thomas Gauthier has made videos about the Canadian political parties from his point of view which is seen on J.J.'s video. J.J. has placed other sources and other forms of footage to counter his argument. There is once in a while a video about his dislike of Thomas, who he calls his "arch-nemesis" and the over importance of French in general.

However, it seems that their rivalry is friendly. J.J. has done a video with Thomas on the reasoning for voting in Canada which is a collaboration video, and there is a debate with Thomas on political parties in Canada.[36] There was a comment asking about ranking the top Quebecers of all time in a ranked list, and J.J. puts Thomas Gauthier as number one.[37]

J.J. went to VidCon in 2019 and hung out with educational YouTubers such as the Casual Historian. In the video, there is a mention of demonetization in the vlog video about VidCon. In a video unboxing video, he received a UV flashlight from another YouTuber called simontv17, and he wished him good luck for his YouTube career.

A YouTuber with the first name of Adam showed up for his special Canadian video for his 100 thousand subscriber video. Some YouTubers are mentioned as props for certain viewpoints such as the idea of the Canadian Red Ensign was used a historical and far-right political point of view such as by Faith J Goldy using the Red Ensign in her profile page.

Another example was the mention of Diamond and Silk - The Viewers View showing up to Trump's social media summit in 2019 instead of Vidcon despite running an active YouTube channel, and in that same video about Vidcon, there was a brief overview of Live Action and other conservative YouTubers.

He has also made a commentary rebuttal of Grunge which about a video that is more about Canadian culture.

Bryton Cherrier made a video about J.J. where he claimed that he is well informed and unbiased mostly, but that the articles he writes are biased. J.J. commented on the video that Bryton had "totally [taken the] clip out of context".[38] The video was later made private.[39]

He was featured in a voice over in a video by Knowing Better about obeying authority for reading a paragraph featured in an ad in the video.[40] Knowing Better mentioned J.J.'s video about the inefficiencies of recycling in a video about the history of oil.[41] He also mentioned him as a "from by good pal Knowing Better".[42] Another example of a Knowing Better of a voice over of a news article about the Canadian legion.[43]

In a video about controversial Canadian holidays, Steve Ramsey was mentioned in the video description as doing a voice over line.[44]

KhAnubis did a video on Washington D.C. statehood where J.J. read a line from the US. Constitution.[45]

J.J. watched a Name Explain video and commented,[46] and he mentioned Name Explain in another video.[47]

Mr. Beat was the driver behind J.J.'s trips to Iowa for the 2020 Democratic primaries, and he explained his opinion on matters relating to elections.[48] Mr. Beat also had J.J. as a guest for his livestream where there was a 10 questions asked for one another.[49]

J.J. references Danny Gonzalez in a video about asking the definition of American culture in a part of releasing a Christmas song,[50] and he is a big fan of the channel due to his personality and being a comedy musician.

J.J. did a collaboration video with Half-Asleep Chris about guessing each coin in Australia's coin series which is based on each letter of the alphabet. J.J. did the second part of the 2 part series which are based on the last 13 letters of the alphabet.[51]

J.J. met Laowhy86 at Vidcon 2019 as indicated in a hearted commented on the video about Vidcon.[52]

J.J. references various YouTubers in a video about Falun Gong such as China Uncensored, etc. which can be seen as a negative light.[53] This would lead to China Uncensored having a video about the funding of the various shows which shows that there was no funding by the Falun Gong, but J.J.'s name was not mentioned in the video.[54]

J.J. also did a review and commentary video that was made by Canada Explore which was about the video aimed at getting more tourist to Canada where he explained the inaccuracies in the videos.[55]

J.J. commented on a video by TLDR News since the TLDR News channel was inspired by J.J.'s video on fringe Canadian political parties to do a version for the UK's political parties. There was also a link in the description for his channel and the source material that inspired the video.[56] J.J. also had Jack who is the host of TLDR News try to explain the 2021 Canadian federal election as part of the begining level.[57]

J.J. participated in a country quiz on Spaghetti Road's channel with KhAnubis as his teammate and Mr. Beat and Drew Durnil as his opponent.

J.J. has debated UsefulCharts on the case of monarchism, and J.J. takes the side of anti-monarchy.[58] However, UsefulCharts take the side of pro-monarchy in a rebuttal video.[59]

JrEg collaborated with J.J. a few times on jres channel[60] including being shoved away by JrEg in a video on radical centrism.[61] Jreg and J.J. are apparently very close and Jreg has called him his "mentor" several times.

He also made a video about the end of Canada where he mentions Whatifalthist that mentions the fall of Canada.[62] where he was contacted about.

Ibxtoycat's video was mentioned in a screenshot in a video about quadrants being used by humans to sort various things.[63] In this segment a clip from "The Political Compass Minecraft Server: Which Ideology Is The Best?" was shown,[64] and ibxtoycat posted a comment on J.J's video[65] Later, there was reply asking about ibxtoycat's generation along with a favorite comment.[66]

J.J. made a reference to NFKRZ in one of his videos titled The impossible challenge of human NAMES.[67] NFKRZ, in return, copied J.J's thumbnail from his video Why Russia's flag is BANNED from sports and used it on his video Why is Russia banned from the Olympics?.[68][69]

  • Some other references include using NFKRZ as a paid political party member.[70][71]

In April of 2024 he appeared on Destiny's podcast, Bridges.[72]

Video on Simon Whistler[]

J.J. makes an entire video about Simon Whistler and his various channel such as VisualPolitik EN which he describes Whistler's simplified viewpoint on Canada and Canadian politics. J.J. describes his viewpoints as, "Simon is a clear political leftist who clearly decided a long time ago that Canada was simplified going to be his 'good example' country."[73] J.J. mentions counter-arguments to Simon's viewpoints and evidence. Simon stopped hosting the channel after this.

This later caused a video by a YouTuber called danframpt0n where is clarified J.J.'s point of view and making the argument even more stronger. J.J. mentioned in the comments section that he appreciated the shoutout.[74]
