Barrington DeVaughn "Peggy" Hendricks[2] (born: October 22, 1989),[3] better known online as JPEGMAFIA (also known as Devon Hendryx),[4] is an American[2] musician known for his experimental hip-hop music.[5]
Early life[]
He was born on October 22, 1989, in Flatbush, New York.[3] When he was a pre-teen, his family moved to Alabama, and after graduating high school, he enlisted to the military and parpicipated in the Iraq War in 2003.[6][7]
Career[]
On January 16, 2011, he released his first album under the name "Devon Hendryx," titled Generation Y.[8] On February 14, 2016, he released Black Ben Carson under the name "JPEGMAFIA."[9]
On June 3, 2025, he managed to get his master tracks from his 2018 album, Veteran, returned to him. As a result, he announced the release of the director's cut version of Veteran, with it being released on June 6, 2025.[10] Also on that same day, he posted three videos on his X account, showing a woman wearing a hat saying "MAKE EXPERIMENTAL RAP SEXY AGAIN" at a shooting range, promoting the release.[11][12][13]
He also released his first viral single, 1539 N. Calvert, on a 7-inch vinyl, as a celebration of his RIAA gold certification, containing the original mix, instrumental, and inserts.[14]

Trivia[]
- On almost all of his cover arts, excluding Black Ben Carson and We Live In A Society,[note 2] a cursor is displayed at a random spot.
- He produced other artists' songs for their albums, notably We Buy Diabetic Test Strips and VULTURES 1.[35][36][37]
- He once made a diss track on Morrissey due to him making a shirt with James Baldwin in the middle, with a line from one of the lines from The Smiths' song.[38] The song was featured on Veteran as track 16.[39][40]
- One of his tags is sampled from Edge's theme, You Think You Know Me.[41] This was used in several songs.[42][43][44]
- Another is from a ExpertVillage Leaf Group clip, titled "Importing the JPEG for Digital Embroidery Machine Designs."[45] It uses two clips; one saying "I've named this one" and the other is "JPEG."[46][47] A notable example of this being featured is on either on or off the drugs.[48]
- He is known for sampling other clips, such as a 1985 Nichiro commercial being featured on Garbage Pale Kids.[49]
- The OFFLINE! extended play contains tracks that weren't added to any of the online and offline versions of LP! due to sample clearing.[50]
- He has USB sticks for most of his albums. He had a 8GB stick for All Me Heroes Are Cornballs,[51] a key flashdrive USB for LP!,[52] a vape USB for SCARING THE HOES,[53] and a cross necklace for I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU (DIRECTORS CUT).[54]
- He originally gathered 50 views for around 15 years before his music started gaining traction.[55]
- He was known for regularly receiving a score more than an 8/10 from Anthony Fantano.[56] However, when Fantano reviewed JPEGMAFIA and Flume's We Live In A Society EP, he gave it a 5/10, breaking the streak entirely.[57]
- He also received a GREAT JOB/10 (or 👏/10) on I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU (DIRECTORS CUT).[58]
- He didn't intend to release 1539 N. Calvert as a single because his label thought he was incompetent.[14]
- Both the Veteran Bandcamp release and the director's cut contains his Louisiana driver's license, with his personal info blurred out. It was supposed to pay homage to Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version.[59]
Notes[]
- ↑ On streaming services, it's often referred to as "OFFLINE" without the exclamation mark, in replacement of the offline version of LP! itself.
- ↑ On Bandcamp, the cursor does make an appearance, both on Black Ben Carson and We Live In A Society, both with alternative cover arts. However, on streaming services, it doesn't show the cursor.
