Jamuna TV (Bengali: যমুনা টেলিভিশন) , commonly known as Jamuna TV, stylized as JAMUNA|tv, is a privately owned Bangladeshi satellite and cable news and current affairs television channel, owned by the Jamuna Group, and was founded by the company's founder and former chairman Nurul Islam Babul in 2014.[1]
History[]
In 2002, Jamuna Television was granted a five-year NOC certificate to broadcast on both terrestrial and satellite television. However, in 2005, the BNP-led government revoked its broadcasting rights without explanation. After the High Court allowed broadcasting, the government appealed.[2]
The original Jamuna TV channel, which had expired its certificate, began testing broadcasting in 2009 but was shut down in November due to alleged illegality.[3] In 2010, the High Court ruled the government's order valid,[4] and on July 29, 2013, the channel was granted a license to relaunch.[5] Jamuna Television was officially launched on April 5, 2014, with British foreign correspondent Simon Dring joining as a staff member.[6]
Jamuna Television was temporarily suspended during the 2018 Bangladeshi general election.[7]
Controversies[]
In 2015, Investigation 360 was accused of defaming Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud for airing a report on the Climate Fund,[8] alleging that 35 crore taka was spent on the construction of Sheikh Russell Aviary Park in Rangunia, under sections 501 and 502.[9]
On November 6, 2016, Jamuna TV's senior reporter Shakil Hasan and video journalist Shaheen Alam were attacked while reporting on an illegal polythene bag manufacturing factory in Dhaka. The PRAN-RFL group filed a lawsuit in 2018, while Ravi and the National Board of Revenue filed a case. Jamuna Television's cable broadcast was stopped following the 11th National Assembly elections on December 30, 2018.[10][11]
