Joseph "Joe" Robinette Biden Jr.[2] (born: November 20, 1942) is an American[1] politician who served as the 46th president of the United States from 2021 to 2025. He is also known for serving as vice president from 2009 to 2017 under Barack Obama.
History[]
Personal life[]
Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 20, 1942. His parents were Joe Biden Sr. and Jean Finnegan. His family turned out to be a wealthy stretch, but financial problems arose around the same time Biden was 7 years old. For several years, his family lived with his maternal grandparents. Scranton was on the verge of an economic decline in the 1950s decade, especially since the Great Depression was at its end and the Biden family struggled to find steady jobs. The family soon moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden's father worked as a used car salesman, strong enough to maintaining the family in a middle-class status.
Biden attended a private preparatory school known as Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware. He played football as a half-back and wide receiver. He also played baseball as a utility infielder. Though he lacked the grades during routine assignments, he was class president in his junior and senior years. He graduated from the school in 1961.
Biden attended the University of Delaware in Newark, where he played for the college football team, but quit to focus on his studies after receiving poor grades. Still unexceptional and often ridiculed by other students and staff, Biden received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965 with a double major in history and political science, and a minor in English.
On August 27, 1966, Biden married Neilia Hunter, who had recently graduated from Syracuse University. The wedding ceremony took place at a Catholic church in Skaneateles, New York, under the recommendation of Hunter's parents. In 1965, Bide attended the Syracuse University College of Law, where he received a juris doctorate degree in 1968. He was admitted to the Delaware bar in 1969.
Career beginnings[]
In 1968, Biden clerked at a Wilmington law firm headed by prominent local republican William Prickett. He seemed to disliked democratic Delaware governor Charles L. Terry's conservative racial politics and supported a more liberal Republican, Russell W. Peterson, who defeated Terry in 1968. Biden was recruited by local republicans, but registered as an independent due to his distaste for republican's presidential candidate Richard Nixon.
In 1969, Biden practiced law first as a public defender and then at a firm headed by a locally active democrat. Biden later registered himself as a democrat. Despite his intentions to getting into corporate law firms, it did not pay very well, and later decided to support his income by managing properties.
In 1970, Biden ran for the 4th District Seat on the New Castle County Council on a liberal platform that included support for public housing in the suburbs. Biden won the general election and took office on January 5, 1971. He served for two years as he opposed large highway projects he argued might disrupt Wilmington neighborhoods.
In 1972, Biden defeated the incumbent J. Caleb Boggs for the junior U.S. senator slot in Delaware. His campaign funds were so low that many projected that he would not win easily. With the support of his family, they helped fund the campaign, which relied on meeting voters face-to-face and hand-distributing position papers. While holding office as the junior senator of Delaware, Biden focused on the environment, the withdrawal from Vietnam, civil rights, mass transit, equitable taxation, and health care.
On December 18, 1972, only a few weeks after the election for the junior senator, Biden's wife and their one-year-old daughter Naomi died in an automobile accident while going shopping in Hockessin, Delaware. Their station wagon was hit by a semi-trailer truck as it pulled out from an intersection. Their sons Beau (aged 3) and Hunter (aged 2) survived the accident and were taken to the hospital in fair condition. Beau with a broken leg and other wounds, and Hunter with a minor skull fracture and other head injuries. The situation with these family matters affected Biden so much that he felt the urge to resign from his position as junior senator and take his own life by jumping off the Delaware Memorial Bridge. With the support of Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, Biden decided to carry on and resume his activities. It is alleged that the driver was drunk.
Political career[]
His first political office was being a Member of the New Castle County Council from the 4th district from 1970 to 1972. Other notable positions he held consisted of being a United States Senator from Delaware from 1973-2009 and was the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009-2017, serving under the Obama Administration. He ran on the Democratic ticket for President in 2020. Major concern was made about his mental health and age. He made a lot of controversial and awkward statements, regarding an enemy named 'Cornpop', kids jumping on his lap and insulting a veteran before the primaries, but then easily winning the nomination.[3][4] On November 14, 2020, he defeated 45th President Donald Trump in the 2020 United States presidential election and was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States on January 20, 2021. On January 21st, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filed an article of impeachment against Joe Biden, citing his son's involvement in Ukraine. On July 21st, 2024, Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election.[5]

Controversies[]
Classified document incident[]
On January 9, 2023, The Joe Biden classified documents incident involved the discovery of classified documents from his Senate tenure and vice presidency in his possession at multiple locations, including his personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware, and the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, D.C.[6] A special counsel investigation led by Robert K. Hur concluded that President Joe Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified military and national security information but recommended no criminal charges be filed against him due to his cooperation with the investigation and the difficulty in proving intent to break the law.[7]
The investigation found that Biden knew about the classified documents in his home as far back as 2017, when he was no longer vice president, and that he shared some of the information with a ghostwriter for his memoir published that year.[8] Biden cooperated with the investigation by turning in classified documents to the National Archives and the Department of Justice, consenting to the search of multiple locations, and sitting for a voluntary interview.
In contrast to the Trump classified documents investigation, where Trump didn't cooperate with authorities. Biden on the other hand cooperated with authorities and turned in the documents, while Trump allegedly obstructed justice and resisted turning over the documents.[9] The special counsel's report was released on February 8, 2024, and concluded that no criminal charges would be brought against Biden.
Hunter Biden incidents[]
The Hunter Biden laptop incident began in December 2019, when a Delaware computer repairman, John Paul Mac Isaac, claimed that Hunter Biden had left a laptop at his shop. The FBI seized the laptop under a subpoena from a Wilmington grand jury and concluded that it was genuine and not tampered with. In October 2020, three weeks before the U.S. presidential election, The New York Post published emails from the laptop, alleging corruption involving Joe Biden, Hunter's father and the Democratic presidential nominee. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter suppressed the story, with Facebook executives discussing censorship decisions to please what they assumed would be an incoming Biden-Harris administration. The FBI had warned tech companies about a potential Russian disinformation campaign involving the laptop before the story broke. In June 2024, federal prosecutors used the laptop as evidence in a criminal case against Hunter Biden, alongside testimony from an FBI agent involved in authenticating and investigating the laptop.[10]
Hunter Biden was facing the possibility of jail time due to his convictions on both gun and tax charges. In June 2024, he was found guilty of three federal gun charges for lying about his drug use on a background check form to purchase a handgun and for possessing the firearm while using illegal drugs.[11] Additionally, in January 2025, he pleaded guilty to three felony tax offenses and six misdemeanor tax offenses, involving a scheme to avoid paying over $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019.[12] President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter in December 2024, just weeks before his scheduled sentencing.[13]
Sexual misconduct allegations[]
In March 2020, Joe Biden faced an allegation came from Tara Reade, who claimed that Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993, when she was a staff assistant in his Senate office. Reade alleged that Biden pinned her against a wall, touched her inappropriately, and made unwanted advances, which she said left her feeling uncomfortable and harassed.[14] In addition to Reade's allegations, seven other women have accused Biden of inappropriate touching or behavior, ranging from unwanted hugs to forehead-to-forehead greetings.[15] They alleged that there were instances where Biden allegedly touched the women and hugged them for extended periods.[16]
