Journey is an American rock band that was formed in 1973 by formed members of Santana, Steve Miller Band, and Frumious Bandersnatch. Currently, their latest album is called Freedom, which was released on July 8, 2022.[1] The band, consisting of Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Jason Derlatka, Deen Castronovo, Todd Jensen, and Arnel Pineda, is the last remaining original member.

History[]

Formation[]

The original members of Journey came together in San Francisco in 1973 under the guidance of former Santana manager Herbie Herbet. The group was originally called Golden Gate Rhythm Section and was intended to serve as a back-up group for the Bay-Area artists. After one performance in Hawaii, the group decided to move away from being a "Back-up group" and decided to develop a jazz fusion style. John Villanueva came up with the group name "Journey," after an unsuccessful radio contest to name the group.

Journey experimented with space & prog rock. They would eventually add Steve Perry as a vocalist.[2]

Hiatus[]

The band went on a hiatus in 1987 after their Raised on Radio tour. Columbia Records released the Greatest Hits compilation in 1988, which became a best-selling album, selling over 15 million copies and continuing to sell 500,000 to a million copies annually. The compilation topped the Billboard charts for 750 weeks until 2008.[3]

Reunion[]

Perry reunited with Journey in 1995, assuming Herbie Herbert would no longer be the band's manager. Irving Azoff, a former Eagles manager, was hired as the new manager. Steve Smith and Ross Valory returned, and the band began writing material for their next album.
