Kai Carlo Cenat III[1] (born: December 16, 2001 (2001-12-16) [age 22])[2] is an American YouTuber and Twitch streamer known for his comedic vlogging content and prank videos. He is one member of the YouTube group known as AMP.

In March of 2023, although he did not become the most followed Twitch streamer,[3] Kai Cenat claimed the highest subscription count with 306,000 subscribers, dethroning Ludwig.[4] As of August 5, 2023, Kai has the most current subscribers on Twitch with 88,000 subscribers.[5]

Early life[]

Cenat was born on December 16, 2001 in New York City. He was raised in The Bronx borough by a Haitian father and Trinidadian mother.[6] Kai has three siblings, a younger maternal half-brother named Kaleel, an older full brother named Devonte,[7] and a twin sister named Kaia.[8]

Originally aspiring to be a comedian, Cenat posted short-form content on Facebook and Instagram during middle and high school.

Cenat attended Frederick Douglass Academy for his secondary education. He graduated high school in 2019[9] and then attended Morrisville State College in August 27, 2019,[10] to study Business Administration. He eventually dropped out of college in 2020[11] due to the struggle of keeping up with schoolwork and content creation.[12][13]

Career[]

Kai Cenat posted his first video on Facebook when he was 13 on July 1, 2015. Cenat also uploaded his first YouTube video in January 13, 2018,[14] and began making videos surrounding pranks and challenges.[15] He gained more than 3.4 million subscribers to his comedy-focused self-titled YouTube channel and on September 21, 2019, he first went viral recording prank videos such as extreme ding dong ditching while in college. He also has amassed more than 2.9 million Instagram followers.[16] He joined the YouTube group AMP (Any Means Possible) after being discovered by fellow Bronx-born YouTuber Fanum. He regularly appeared in the channel's videos from then on. He began streaming on Twitch in February 2021 after migrating from YouTube, broadcasting gaming and reaction content.

He had an acting role in the trailer for Polo G's June 2022 single "Distraction".[17] Cenat’s song, titled Bustdown Rollie Avalanche, has over 10 million views on YouTube and more than 25 million clicks on Spotify. He also has another song with Fanum titled Smoking on Fredo, which has also crossed 1.5 million streams on Spotify.

In 2022, Cenat began including celebrity guests on his streams, including Bobby Shmurda in April,[18] Lil Baby in October, and 21 Savage in November, who helped him receive his highest viewership at the time with 283,245 concurrent viewers at its peak.[19]

He is also famous on TikTok for his comedy videos and has acquired over 921k fans and 9.6 million likes on his kai_cenat account.

In October 2022, he was nominated for the 12th Streamy Awards in the "Streamer of the Year" and "Breakout Streamer" categories, winning the former in December.[20][21][22] In November 2022, he had a guest appearance in Lil Uzi Vert's music video for "Just Wanna Rock".[23]

On January 31, 2023, Cenat began a month-long subathon. The 21-year-old US streamer amassed 300,000 subscribers on the Amazon-owned streaming service, following a month-long drive to increase subscriptions. His 'subathon' launched on February 1 and saw Cenat streaming 24 hours a day: chatting, gaming and interviewing guests, as well as sleeping, on camera. The popular YouTuber officially overtook former Twitch record holder Ludwig on Tuesday. On February 28, 2023, he became the most-subscribed Twitch streamer of all time, reaching 306,621 subscribers at its peak.[24]

In the Spring of 2023, Kai decided to DM R&B and Pop singer SZA. He had met her backstage during the SOS Tour when she was in LA and wanted her advice.[25] To help him reach out, he contacted Offset, a member of Migos and Cardi B's husband. Initially, Kai planned to include the line, "But that ass was fat in the last video," but Offset advised him to simplify it to "I have an idea," which Kai agreed to. However, after sending the message, Kai was blocked by SZA. Confused and disappointed, he felt sad that his plan had failed.[26]

In the summer of 2023, during one of his Twitch streams, his chat suggested he would be a good fit for the Nickelodeon movie "Good Burger". Following this conversation, someone involved in the production of the sequel, "Good Burger 2", which was filming around the same time, reached out to him the next day. He agreed to the offer and was cast in a supporting role, marking his first major acting role in a movie.[27]

On February 8, 2024 during a livestream Cenat announced that he has officially partnered with Nike stating, "I would like to announce that we are officially a part of the Nike family". He became the first streamer to get signed with the company.[28] Later on February 17, 2024, Cenat won "Streamer of the Year" and "Best Just Chatting Streamer" at the 2024 Streamer Awards. He was also nominated for "Best Streamed Event" at the same ceremony.[29][30] On July 13, 2024, he appeared and participated in a MrBeast video titled "50 YouTubers Fight for $1,000,000".[31] In October 2024, McDonald's announced that they had teamed up with Cenat to promote the launch of chicken Big Macs in the US.[32]

Controversies[]

Djigui Seck cover up allegations[]

On January 5, 2023, Cenat was accused by TikToker Jovi Pena of downplaying and refusing to help her after her alleged rape at a New Years Eve party he hosted. Pena claimed that at some point she asked Cenat if she could leave the party, to which Cenat told her to go to sleep in an upstairs room due to her being drunk. Pena then claimed that a fellow party-goer named Djigui Seck entered said room and "brutally raped me to the point where I bled," while she was asleep.[33] Pena accused Cenat of not adequately responding to Pena when she questioned him about the alleged rapist.[34]

On January 6, Cenat responded on stream, claiming that the reason he didn't respond was because he went to contact the police and his lawyers. He also claimed he did not want to make the incident public. He claimed that Seck had been a good friend of his since high school, but that he had no knowledge of the alleged rape and that he had not been in contact with either party since the incident.[35]

Twitch bans[]

On January 23, 2023, while live on Twitch, Cenat ingested a copious amount of cannabis edibles on camera; he later passed out on stream from the intake.[36] Later on January 26, he was banned by Twitch for an unexplained reason; though it was widely believed to have been due to cannabis incident.[37] His Twitch account has since been restored.

On April 17, Kai announced that he had been banned on Twitch for the second time, with the reason of his termination being unknown. Many of Kai's fans speculate that the ban might have come about as a result of Kai crashing a dirt bike into his set up just a few days prior.[38] According to a source close to Dexerto, Kai's Twitch ban was due to "repeated explicit simulated sexual activity in GTA".[39]

Union Square giveaway riot and arrest[]

In the days leading up to August 4, 2023, Cenat had announced that he would be giving away gaming consoles, gaming computers, gaming chairs, microphones and webcams. Cenat announced the giveaway to take place at 4 P.M. Eastern Standard Time at Union Square in New York City. A crowd began to gather at around 3 P.M, and then a riot starting to persuade at 4 P.M,. This resulted in cars being damaged, riotors climbing on buildings and statues, fireworks being used, and throwing objects towards police officers. The riot concluded with 13 injuries, nine towards Cenat's fans and four towards the New York Police Department law enforcers, and vandalism at Union Square, including an unfinished construction site that was destroyed. 65 people have been arrested so far, including 30 juveniles.[40][41]

At 5 P.M., Cenat was arrested and taken into custody. Kai was charged with a felony first-degree riot causing public injury and damage, two misdemeanors, two counts of inciting a riot and two counts of unlawful assembly. He is expected to appear in court in August.[42]

Trivia[]

  • Kai is credited with popularizing viral internet slang words such as Rizz, which is derived from "charisma" and defined as "style, charm, or attractiveness";[43] and Gyat, a permutation of "Goddamn" that is used in reference to a person with a prominent buttocks. Oxford University Press named Rizz its word of the year for 2023,[44] and Gyat was nominated for the American Dialect Society's 2023 Word of The Year.[45]
  • Kai won the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2024 for Favorite Gamer.[46]
