Kapri was born Dieuson Octave on June 11, 1997, in Pompano Beach, Florida. He later legally changed his name to Bill Kahan Kapri. He started rapping in elementary school and would go to a trap house to record music. He spent most of his youth reading thesauruses and dictionaries to improve his vocabulary. He participated in crimes and brawls with his friend, and got expelled from his school for fighting, and got arrested in middle school for auto theft.
At age six, he used the nickname "Black", also using "Lil' Black", and when he joined Instagram, he used Kodak Black, his current name. He confirmed that the reason for the name was "...'cause you know Kodak, that's pictures and all that."
Career[]
At age 12 in 2009, Kapri joined a rap group named Brutal Youngnz, under the name J-Black, then joining another rap group named The Kolyons. He released his first mixtape in 2013, Project Baby, followed by Heart of the Projects in 2014, which was again followed by Institution in 2015. Rapper Drake posted a video of him dancing to one of Kapri's songs, "Skrt", helping him gain popularity. He was featured on multiple singles, which helped boosted his popularity.
