Lame Genie is a cover band that does covers of video game themes and sometimes themes from TV shows and films. The band features Jeff McGowan at guitar, Kyle Sawaia doing the drums and programming, and Mike Costigan at the bass.

History[]

2013[]

Lame Genie first joined YouTube on July 22, 2013. A week after joining, it did its first cover, a medley of the Kirby theme from the Super Smash Bros. series. The next cover was the Overworld 2 theme from Super Mario Bros. 3, which released on August 5. On August 12, a cover of the Dark World theme from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was released. On August 26, a cover of the Aquatic Ambiance from Donkey Kong Country was released.

2014[]

The first cover for 2014 was a one minute cover of the DuckTales theme, which released on January 11. On February 2, the opening theme from Tecmo Super Bowl was covered. On February 14, a cover of Bloody Tears from Castlevania was released.

The first live performance came on May 9, which was a three minute medley featuring themes from Mega Man 3. On July 3, a ten minute medley with themes from the Zelda series was released. On July 17, Kalimari Desert from Mario Kart 64 was covered during a live performance.

On September 13, a cover of the opening stage ("Strike the Earth") from Shovel Knight was released. On Christmas Day, a cover of the title theme from Rocky and Bullwinkle was released.

2015[]

2015 began with a cover of the decisive battle from Final Fantasy VI, which released on January 27. Nearly a month later, a cover of the boss theme from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time was released.

On April 22, a cover of the Marx battle from Kirby Super Star was released, which drew a broader audience. On November 2, a cover of Dragon Roost Island from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was released. On December 1, a cover of the Chill Penguin stage from Mega Man X was released. Three days later, a cover of Jolly Roger Bay from Super Mario 64 was released along with Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine.

2016[]

2016 began with a cover of the Flying Battery Zone from Sonic & Knuckles, which released on February 10. On February 22, a cover of the Asgore theme from Undertale was released. Asgore was covered live at the PAX East music festival on April 26.

To promote the recent release of Pokémon GO, a cover of the overworld map theme from the game was released on July 26. On September 29, Lame Genie did a cover of The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day, which featured Josh Herzer doing the vocals. On November 7, a cover of the Lich Yard from Shovel Knight was released. On November 8, a cover of Stage 1 from the NES game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released.

2017[]

To promote the recent release of Final Fantasy XV, "Stand Your Ground" was covered and released on January 13. On March 27, a cover of J-E-N-O-V-A from Final Fantasy VII was released. To promote the recent release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a cover of Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 8 released on May 2.

On June 24, the next medley featured themes from StarTropics. On July 5, the next medley featured themes from Mega Man 3, which ran for six minutes. On August 22, a boss theme medley from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time was released. On September 10, a cover of the Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released. The final cover of 2017 was Stage 1 of Downtown Springfield from The Simpsons Arcade Game, which was posted on Christmas Day.

2018[]

The first cover of 2018 was the theme of Gwyn, Lord of Cinder from Dark Souls, released on February 11. Fifteen days later, a cover of the City Escape from Sonic Adventure was released, which featured Josh Herzer doing the vocals. On March 27, a medley with themes from Punch Out!! for the NES was released.

After posting nine full albums, the next cover was the Taurus Demon theme from Dark Souls, released on May 27. On September 19, the Theme of Laura from Silent Hill 2 was released. On October 16, the theme of Koopa's Road from Super Mario 64 was released. On November 28, the theme of Simon Belmont from Super Castlevania IV was released.

2019[]

The first cover of 2019 was the Glacial Peak from The Messenger, released on New Year's Day. The next two covers were from Zombies Ate My Neighbors, which were the themes of Chainsaw Hedgemaze Mayhem and the Titanic Toddler. The third cover of the game was No Assembly Required, which came about on June 7.

On June 26, the theme of Auto's Shop from Mega Man 7 was released. Three more covers came from Zombies Ate My Neighbors, which were Mars Needs Cheerleaders, Dr. Tongue's Castle Of Terror, and The Evening of the Undead. On September 20, the Fire Scramble theme from Gradium III was released. The next live performance took place at The News Café in Pawtucket, Massachusetts, which featured the boss battle medley from TMNT: Turtles in Time, released on November 25.

2020[]

The first cover for 2020 was the Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), which released on March 2. On March 16, a cover of Stickerbush Symphony blending element between Donkey Kong Country 2 and Super Smash Bros was released, which featured Lacey Johnson. On April 9, the theme of Yogurt Yard from Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land was released.

On April 21, a 40-minute medley with various video game themes was released, which served as a home charity performance to combat the impending COVID-19 crisis. On May 19, the Millencolin theme from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was released with Josh Herzer featured at the vocals.

On June 8, a cover of the Cascade Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey was released. On June 22, the mini-boss theme from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game was released. On June 25, the boss theme from Super Mario Bros. 3 was released. Four days later, the Fever theme from Dr. Mario was released. On July 7, the Chill theme from Dr. Mario was released.

On July 13, the room theme from Bubble Bobble was covered. On July 23, the Crimson Dragon theme from Mega Man Star Force 3 was released, featuring ChaoticMeatball. On July 27, a cover of the Festival of Servants from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released.

Starting from August 24, Lame Genie began doing covers from Fall Guys, beginning with Fall 'N' Roll featuring Lacey Johnson. The next cover from the game was Fall For The Team, released on September 16. On September 28, a cover of the main theme from Among Us was released. On October 5, "Ahead On Our Way" from Final Fantasy VII was released. On October 19, the Hornet's Theme from Hollow Knight was released.

With Steve and Alex being DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lame Genie covered the Halland / Dalarna theme as a means of promotion, which released on October 26. On Halloween Day, a cover of Edison Family's Theme from Maniac Mansion was released. On November 9, the theme of On the Rooftop of Taiyo High School from Rival Schools was released.

On November 16, the Liyue Battle Theme from Genshin Impact was released. On November 30, the theme of Beyond the Colosseum from Demon's Crest was released. On December 14, the Wushu Dolls theme from Cyberpunk 2077 was released. On December 21, Time to Make History from Persona 4 was released, which featured Kaitlin Findlay doing the vocals. The last cover for 2020 was the Beautiful Dead from Danganronpa, released on December 28.

2021[]

The first cover in 2021 was the One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII, released on January 4. On January 11, a cover of Stages 2 & 5 from Bad Dudes was released. On January 18, a cover of Bulk and Skull's Theme from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was released. On February 15, a battle themes medley from Chrono Trigger was released.

With Pyra and Mythra being DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lame Genie covered the Pyra / Mythra theme on March 5 as a show of promotion. On March 15, a cover of Lavender Town from Pokémon Red & Green was released. On March 29, a cover of the main theme from Jaws was released. On April 5, a cover of the Moon from DuckTales was released.

On April 12, the main theme from Mortal Kombat (a.k.a. Techno Syndrome) featured Gilbert Gottfried doing the background vocals.[1] On April 26, a cover from Friday Night Funkin' titled "Blammed" was released. On May 10, the map theme from Mass Effect featured RichaadEB as an additional guitarist. On May 17, a cover of the Iron Blue Intention combined with Castlevania: Bloodlines and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released.

On May 24, a cover of the Azhdaha Battle Theme from Genshin Impact featured Psamathes doing the vocals. On June 7, the Song of Storms from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was covered. On June 14, a cover of the Armored Armadillo stage from Mega Man X was released. On June 23, a medley with themes from Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was released, commencing the 30th anniversary of Sonic.

To promote the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Lame Genie released a cover of the Ballad of the Goddess on July 12. On July 27, a cover of "Another Medium" from Undertale was released. On August 10, a cover of Bubblegum K.K. from Animal Crossing featured Longestsoloever as an additional guitarist. On August 17, a cover of Zhongli's Theme from Genshin Impact was released.

Eight covers from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time began with the Alleycat Blues on August 24, which then followed up by Sewer Surfin', Technodrome, the Elevator theme, Prehistoric Turtlesaurus, Skull and Crossbones, Bury My Shell at Wounded Knee, Neon Night Riders, and Starbase. Combined with all eight covers, it all ran until November 9.

On November 19, the theme song from Battlefield 2042 was released. On November 30, the main theme from Metal Gear Solid 2 was released. On December 7, the main theme of One-Punch Man featured LordsoftheTrident doing the vocals in both Japanese and English languages. On December 14, the training montage theme from Rocky IV was released. The final release of 2021 was a 40-minute medley of themes from various video games, released on December 28.

2022[]

The first cover of 2022 featured a mashup theme with Bugsnax in Fall Guys, released on January 8. On January 11, a cover of the Simulatte Brawl theme from The Matrix 4: Resurrections was released. The next three covers featured themes from Friday Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, which included the opening theme, the Fazer Blaster Jam, and Daycare theme.

On February 8, a cover of the Moon Base Alpha Meme from John Madden Football '92, which paid tribute to John Madden, who passed away nearly two months prior. On March 15, a cover of the main theme from Elden Ring was released.

To promote the recent release of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Lame Genie did a cover of the Road of Dedede, which turned out to be a global success. Following three more covers from Friday Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, Lame Genie did six covers of themes from Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which included the Sword of the Surviving Guardian, a Full-Speed Farewell from the New World, the Morpho Knight theme, Masked and Wild Dedede, Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit, and The Raging Lion Roars.

On June 10, a cover of Ganyu's theme from Genshin Impact was released. On June 17, a cover of Chun-Li's theme from Street Fighter 6 was released, even though the game didn't release until a year later. On June 24, the boss battle theme from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge was released. On July 15, Lame Genie did another cover from Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Running Through The New World.

On July 22, a cover of the Forest Interlude from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong-Quest was released. On August 5, a cover of the fortress and castle theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was released. On August 12, the first level from The Great Cave Offensive in Kirby Super Star was released.

With the recent release of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Lame Genie did three covers from the game, which included You Will Know Our Names ~ Finale + Climax, Chain Attack, and Weight of Life. On September 23, a cover of the dark world dungeon theme from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was released. On September 30, a cover of the Undersea Palace from Chrono Trigger was released.

On October 21, a cover of the Wood Man stage from Mega Man 2 was released. On November 4, a cover of the main theme from The Simpsons was released. On November 25, the shrine theme from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released. To promote the recent release of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, there were four covers to close out the year of 2022, which included the Penny battle theme, the Sada & Turo battle theme, the Team Star boss theme, and the Aero Zero overworld theme.
