Devin James Stone (born: December 16, 1983YouTuber best known for his application of law experience to entertainment, pop culture and current events. The purpose of the YouTube channel is to give ‘an insider’s view to the legal system’.
), better known online as LegalEagle, is an American lawyer andCareer[]
Stone excelled academically in his higher education. He graduated with a B.S. in Political Science with honours in 2005 at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the UCLA School of Law in 2008, graduating with an A- average whilst juggling several extracurricular activities and even personal hobbies. His academic achievements earned him a scholarship in law school to discourage him from transferring schools.
Legal Career[]
In the same year of his graduation, Stone worked as an attorney for three years at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, and as a Trial Attorney at Barnes at Thornburg LLP for seven years. In 2018, he founded Stone Law, which is headquartered in D.C. He also founded LegalEagle, LLC, a preparatory online educational service that helps law students improve their academic performance. As of 2020, he still offers both services while producing content on YouTube.
Stone is admitted to the bar at four states (California, Maryland, New York, Virginia) and D.C.
YouTube Career[]
Stone founded his LegalEagle YouTube channel at 2017. He initially started posting videos that were about law school, but didn’t make videos pertaining to law applying to popular culture until 2018, where he reviewed law practice in TV shows. He has also made a second YouTube channel, LegalEagle Law School, which was created in 2018, but has been inactive since 2019.
His YouTube channel hosts several series. A few of these series include Real Life, Real Law Reviews, where he reviews real-life law scenarios such as the legal aftermath of the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol, Real Lawyer Reacts, where he reviews law in TV shows and movies, and Laws Broken, where he points out the laws broken in TV shows and movies.
LegalEagle announced that he was suing The White House, CIA, US. State Department, etc. since he was unable to get a freedom of information request granted.
For his 2 million subscriber video, he paid for a Cameo with Rudy W. Giuliani, and the request was accepted.[2]
Controversies[]
The Game Theorists[]
On January 5, 2019, LegalEagle accused MatPat of using his video on Fortnite and copyright, to supplement his own Game Theory from December 30, 2018[3], without providing credit, finding the timing and similarity of arguments provided as ‘circumstantial evidence’. His arguments were subsequently criticized by the comments and even some Commentary YouTubers.[4] MatPat commented on the video, refuting the claim that their video was based on his.[5] The video was subsequently unlisted.
Kyle Rittenhouse[]
In November 23, 2021, Stone uploaded the video Kyle Rittenhouse: Murder or Self-Defense?, which many saw as biased against Kyle Rittenhouse due to him withholding important information to the case, such as claiming that Gaige Grosskreutz had a case for self-defense, despite the fact that he was armed with a gun and pointed it at Kyle first, which therefore gives Kyle a case for self-defense, not him. He also left out the fact that Anthony Huber assaulted Kyle by beating him with a skateboard, which is clearly intent of harming him.[6]
