Wasalu Muhammad Jaco (born: February 16, 1982), better known professionally as Lupe Fiasco, is an American rapper known for his music.
Life[]
Jaco was born on February 16, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois. After his parents got divorced at the age of five, he went to live with his mother. His father had an often strange influence over the family, which Fiasco had described by saying, "After school, my father would come and get us and take us out into the world—one day, we're listening to N.W.A, the next day we're listening to Ravi Shankar, the next day, he's teaching us how to shoot an AK-47, the next day, we're at karate class, the next day, we're in Chinatown..."
In the eighth grade, he began to rap poems, and after hearing Nas's album It Was Written, he began to pursue hip-hop. He met a gang member by the name of Bishop G, and together they would make music, which gained notoriety at Jaco's school. He had adopted several stage names beginning with "Lu", which was a nickname given to him in high school. He later added "Lupe", then "Fiasco" to his stage name.
Career[]
Jaco began creating music at the age of 18, starting as a solo artist in his father's basement. He found various items at several stores which he used to help himself with his music career. Jaco joined a group called "Da Pak" which was influenced by many popular rappers. The group got signed to Epic Records, releasing a single before breaking up.
He signed a solo deal with Arista Records, later getting dropped after the president and CEO of the record label got fired. He remixed the song "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" by Kanye West, which was his first notable act during his career. He then released many albums and singles, which include albums Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor and Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, and singles "I Gotcha", "Daydreamin'", and "Superstar".
