Marina Masako Watanabe[citation needed], better known online as marinashutup, is an American[citation needed] former YouTuber and senior social media editor at feminist magazine Bitch Media. She eventually left the platform to pursue other jobs, with her last video being uploaded in 2020[1], though she uploads videos exclusively on Patreon.

Content[]

Marina's first videos were vlogs from 2010, but around 2016, with the wake of anti-SJW YouTubers rising and getting famous, Marina became famous for the opposite views. A self identified feminist, she made videos on race[2], reverse racism[3], transphobia[4], gender[5], sexuality[6], nonbinary genders[7], trigger warnings[8], rape culture[9], racial guilt[10], feminism[11], privilege[12], hidden sexism[13], body issues[14] and oppression[15] in her series called "Feminist Fridays".

Marina herself suffers from depression[16] and anxiety[17], and makes videos about the importance of mental health being taken seriously[18] and the stigma around it[19]. When Riley J. Dennis was the center of drama and backlash, she made videos on how to handle internet hatred[20]. She is also known to respond to people such as Arielle Scarcella, Aziz Ansari[21] and Philip DeFranco[22] about hot topics such as racism/sexism. She also brings attention to quotes said by famous racial equality activists[23].

When Donald J Trump ran for president and won, Marina made videos reacting and commenting in dramas related to him[24] and his family[25]. She has made videos about his supporters[26], even writing a poem for them[27]. She supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Presidential election[28].

She also reviews films[29] and analyzes them[30], as well as feminist[31] and queer media[32].

Due to the nature of her content, a lot of her videos have dislikes on them and comments critical of her (though she usually deletes negative comments). She has responded to her criticism and taken it as a way to improve herself[33], but has disabled comments on a lot of other videos. In July 2016 she made one video critiquing her anti-feminist responders and said she did not wish to debate them[34], and has admitted to deleting comments[35].

Apart from being a social media editor at Bitch Media, she has made webinars on websites like Everyday Feminism[36].

Personal Life[]

She was born and raised in Sacramento, where she went to a Catholic school. She is half white and half Japanese[37] and on June 16, 2016[38] she came out as bisexual to her parents. She majored in Gender Studies[39].

Quotes[]

  • "The issues with queer gatekeeping go beyond the scope of LGBTQ representation. Rather, these conversations arise when white queer people attempt to apply discourse around identity more broadly to that of #OwnVoices regarding LGBTQ identity".[citation needed]

Trivia[]

  • She realized she was bi when she was attracted to a lot of TV characters and actresses that were women[40], such as Kristen Stewart[41]. She also had crushes on YouTubers such as Gaby Dunn and Claudia Boleynn[42]
  • She is a huge fan of Sailor Moon.[citation needed]
  • She has a black cat named Stewart.[citation needed]
