―MasaeAnela

MasaeAnela (born: April 25, 1993 (1993-04-25) [age 32]), better known as Masae for short, is an American Let's Player and Twitch Streamer who has made online content since 2009. She is known for her quirky commentary and cute demeanour, and does most, if not all, of the art on her channel and videos herself. In addition to her own content, Masae has occasionally appeared alongside other content creators on their channels and participated in various Dungeons & Dragons games.

Masae started her career in 2009 with a Let's Play of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Since then, Masae has made Let's Plays on several video games, including titles from the Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, and Kirby video game franchises. Among her Let's Plays include Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario RPG, Mario Party 2, Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Banjo-Kazooie, Ōkami, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Pikmin 4. Masae also regularly streams games on Twitch. The games she has steamed include Stardew Valley, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Celeste, VVVVVV, Monster Hunter: World, Super Mario 64, A Hat in Time, Rimworld, Splatoon, Undertale, Lethal Company, Dark Souls, and Mario Kart 8. Streams with story are usually uploaded to her stream playlist. In October 2016, Masae became a Twitch Partner. As of March 2022, Masae runs a secondary channel called Couple's Couch, where she uploads Twitch VODs of her playing co-op games with her boyfriend, BrettUltimus. As of 2024, Masae has 36k followers on Twitch.

In addition to her own content, Masae occasionally appeared alongside other Let's Players, like her ex-fiancee Chuggaaconroy and friend Stephen Georg, and became a recurring guest and co-producer of The Runaway Guys alongside Tom Fawkes. Masae and Emile were in a relationship from 2011 to 2021, and mutually parted ways after their breakup and don't want to be associated with each other, although they later made peace in 2024.

Early life[]

Masae was born on April 25th 1993. She was raised in Georgia and was home schooled for most of her grade school years up until the end of the high school age. Masae went to college and attempted to major in biology and later art, but then dropped out with the growing success of her YouTube channel.

Career[]

Let's Play career[]

Masae was convinced by a friend to start producing "Let's Play" videos. She started her channel and uploaded her first video on October 17th, 2009. Her inspiration for making Let's Plays was NintendoCapriSun, whom she later befriended. Her first Let's Play was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, recorded with a camcorder pointed at her television. In this Let's Play she begins hesitantly, but gained a lot more confidence in herself in future Let's Plays, however, and she's now effusive, excited, and entertaining in her commentary.

Since starting her Let's Playing career, Masae has made Let's Plays on various video games, the majority of which have been released on Nintendo platforms, including titles from the Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, and Kirby video game franchises. Among her Let's Plays include Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario RPG, Mario Party 2, Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Banjo-Kazooie, Ōkami, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Pikmin 4.

Masae's YouTube profile picture changes depending on what game she is Let's Playing. For example, when she played Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, her profile picture depicted her chibi form wearing clothes similar to the character Adeleine. In her videos, Masae has an upbeat commentary style. She also has incredible determination when playing video games, as demonstrated by her 13-hour Undertale stream or how she spent 15 hours attempting to complete a sidequest in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In 2014, to celebrate her channel's 5th anniversary, Masae decided to do a Let's Play of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, the remake of the game that started her Let's Playing career. Masae's channel experienced a rise in popularity after she was featured as a guest on Emile and Stephen's channels, with her reaching the milestone of 100,000 subscribers on YouTube on April 28th 2017. Masae has 129,000 subscribers and 48,951,132 views as of 2023. The official Twitter account for Ōkami gave Masae a shout-out after she began her let's-play of that game, and they also gave one to her and FamilyJules for their rendition of the song Reset.

Masae regularly streams games on Twitch. Masae also regularly streams games on Twitch. After a hiatus, she began to stream more consistently in 2014, resuming her streams of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and VVVVVV, in addition to starting Undertale, Splatoon, and Stardew Valley streams in 2016. Streams with story were uploaded to her stream playlist on her main channel until Masae created a VOD channel called MasaeAnela Achrives in 2021 where she uploads all Twitch VODs.

Let's Draws[]

The first drawing Masae uploaded was of Link on November 27, 2009. Since then, she has posted videos of fanart from a variety of video game series, including Undertale and DanganRonpa, and artwork for her and her friends' Let's Plays.

Other Appearances[]

Masae was a guest for several tournaments hosted by The Runaway Guys and for their Fortune Street series. She also appeared as a fourth player in their Super Mario 3D World Let's Play. She has also appeared on Chuggaaconroy's solo channel. Masae can also be seen periodically on StephenVlog and BreakingNCS, and in Tom Fawkes' vlogs.

Streams[]

Masae first stream was on Ustream in 20XX. Since then, she has gradually done more streaming on Twitch. After a hiatus, she began to stream more consistently in 2015, resuming her streams of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and VVVVVV, in addition to starting Undertale, Splatoon, and Stardew Valley streams in 2016. In October 2016, she became a Twitch Partner.

Collaborations with Chuggaaconroy[]

Masae did several collaborations with Chuggaaconroy (Emile), on both their channels and also on The Runaway Guys and Stephen Georg's vlogs. The series they had collaborated on include Pikmin 3 Mission Mode, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Fortune Street, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Party 2, Splatoon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo, Pokémon Black & White, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

During a pause in uploading content on their accounts, Masae and Emile played Mario Party 2 together. The playthroughs of Pirate Land, Horror Land, Mystery Land, and Bowser Land were uploaded to Emile's account while Space Land and Western Land went to Masae's. Originally Masae and Emile were going to play Mario Party 3 on her channel to follow up their collab of playing Mario Party 2 between their two channels. They skipped to Mario Party 4 on account of technical difficulties. While the duo did return to Mario Party 3 later, they only managed to play the one of the six boards before their breakup.

In January 2024, Masae deleted most videos that featured him on her channel, including the videos of her playing the Mario Party series with him. Currently, the only remaining pieces of content with him directly in it on Masae's channel are the early parts of when she covered the 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns, likely for sake of completion. The videos of them playing Mario Party 2 that were uploaded to Emile’s channel remain however.

Work with The Runaway Guys[]

Masae is a recurring guest member of The Runaway Guys. She finally became the fourth main guest joining Proton Jon, NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy on their LP of Super Mario 3D World playing as Peach. Before that she made multiple appearances on the channel when she played Koopa in MKDD, on Team Streetpassers with Chuggaaconroy, appeared as guest in Burnout Revenge, played Carver in Fortune Street: Mt. Magmageddon, and was a participant in the Bomberman and Super Smash Bros. Wii U tournaments. She also was also with the guys during the third and fourth streams they did on Twitch and regularly assists them for their Thrown Controllers panel. She was also a guest for the Pikmin Adventure portion of Nintendo Land.

The Runaway Guys Tournaments[]

Masae appeared in the Bomberman Live Battlefest tournament. In the Mario Kart: Double Dash tournament, she and Emile were a team called the "Streetpassers", and later in the Runaway Gaiden: Burnout Revenge. She participated in the Smash Bros. For Wii U tournament and made it to the semifinals.

The RunawayGuys Colosseum[]

In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. All of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief. The Runaway Guys Colosseum is a weekend long event that is live streamed every year to raise money for Direct Relief to aid people around the world through crisis and hardships. Combining video games, music, art, and comedy, The Runaway Guys and friends go all out to raise money for charity. Be it comedic stream bumpers, video game modifier donation incentives, catching a rocking concert, or chilling out with some relaxing art time, there is something for everybody to watch and enjoy during the event. With the combined efforts of the community, event staff, and the performers, a total over $1,000,000 has been raised since the inception of the event.

Masae has appeared in every colosseum thus far, and worked with Chuggaaconroy in bumpers for the colosseums. One of their most notable bumpers is Chugga Makes Cookies, released as part of the bumper collection for The Runaway Guys Colosseum 2021.

Appearances in Stephen Georg's vlogs[]

Masae has appeared in a few of Stephen Georg's vlogs, mostly seen with Emile. She has also collaborated with Stephen and Mal on their Let's Play of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Personal life[]

Relationships[]

Masae and Chuggaaconroy dated for 10 years and they were engaged to be married; but went their separate ways in 2021 due to conflict of interests with keeping their relationship discreet, social pressure from the community fanbase adding additional strain to their publicized dynamic, and concerns regarding Emile's personal interactions with certain individuals over time. The both of them made an agreement at the time to quietly and gradually disassociate from each other's content, which became tested in January 2024 when pressed to provide commentary on Emile's status. Masae officially announced her status of no longer being in collaboration with Emile, but later publicly made peace with him and resumed their agreement to disassociate from each other.

As of 2021, Masae is in a relationship with Dungeons and Dragons DM and fellow streamer BrettUltimus. She and Brett work together on IO Publishing (Brett is the developer, Masae is Editing Director, an editor & a writer). They also have a co-op YouTube channel called Couple's Couch where they play through various video game titles.

Pets[]

Currently Masae's pets are her bird Mipha who is a Rose Breasted Cockatoo, and two cats named Leo, and Bijou.

Masae had two Sugar Gliders named Nori and Mellow for nearly 10 years. Nori passed away in May 2024 from cancer, Mellow passed away soon after as he was very attached to Nori.

Masae had a dog named Adri (also known as Little A). Little A was originally intended to be MomAnela's dog when she was adopted, however Little A got very attached to Masae. This became an issue because while Masae did live there at the time, she was coming and going often, and Little A had severe separation anxiety when Masae was not around. As a result, Little A had to be re-homed for the good of both her and Masae and her family. Little A was adopted by a family that was a better fit for her and is doing well.

Before Little A, Masae had a dog named Keiki. Keiki was supposed to be Masae's dog, but she got attached to MomAnela, so he ended up being more her dog in the end. Keiki lived a long healthy life with the family, and passed away after nearly 18 years.

She and Brett had a cat named Leila, who passed away in 2024.

She has had many birds over the years before adopting Mipha. Some of whom are Mochi, Pipi, and Lcee, and Pochi.

Chuggaaconroy emotional abuse allegations[]

Masae's experience and statement were a core and significant part of the overall controversy surrounding , heavily influencing public perception and the subsequent temporary hiatus of their collaborative group, The Runaway Guys.

Masae's experience and statement were a core and significant part of the overall controversy surrounding Chuggaaconroy, heavily influencing public perception and the subsequent temporary hiatus of their collaborative group, The Runaway Guys.

In January 2024, Masae made emotional abuse allegations against her former partner and fellow Let's Player Emile Rosales-Birou, also known as Chuggaaconroy. Masae and Emile's relationship had been private from the beginning, with only their friends and some close associates knowing about it. While the agreement to keep the relationship private was mutually agreed upon initially, at some point, Emile expressed a desire to make their relationship public, which Masae insisted on keeping private due to social pressure regarding their public appearances.[1] Emile respected her wishes and the relationship remained privitized up until January 2024.

Masae states that Emile slowly became more intrusive with her boundaries despite being told to stop repeatedly, being uncomfortable with how Emile talked to/about her in the past, and his behavior regarding interactions with other women both professionally and privately.[2] Masae also stated a power imbalance in their relationship.[3] After she told Emile this, he tried to apologize to her on several occasions, but relapsed on his behavioral issues.[4]

In the middle of 2021, Masae and Emile broke up and made the agreement to no longer associate with each other neither through their content nor their personal interactions. Later in 2022, Emile uploaded his Splatoon 2 Let's Play, which contained cameos of Masae recorded prior to their breakup. Masae, not having approved of this, resumed conversation with him to stop using any further mentions of her, which Emile agreed to.[5] However, the community speculated about Masae and Emile's relationship, even after Masae began her relationship with BrettUltimus.[6][7]

On January 16th, 2024, Emile was accused of sexual harassment by video essayist Lady Emily. On January 24th, Masae released a statement formally disassociating from Emile and disapproving of his actions, citing his history of emotional abuse behavior and negligence regarding her boundaries during their relationship.[8] Her statement led to immediate debate and strong reactions from fans, many of whom rallied behind her and and highlighted patterns of concerning behavior in their older collaborative videos, including instances where Emile would repeatedly make jokes or comments that appeared to make Masae visibly uncomfortable or prompted her to tell him to shut up. While originally viewed as playful banter, Masae’s statement clarified that Emile historically pushed boundaries despite her repeatedly asking him to stop.

Following the statement, Emile and Masae took a hiatus from online appearances, especially following additional allegations from a third individual and a former fan of Emile named Lawly, who accused Emile of sexting her while she was underage at the time. Her allegations were shared by a close friend of hers, the Twitch streamer Werster, and led to widespread condemnation across social media and being widely considered at the time as an abuse of Emile's fame and power dynamic. The allegations against Emile had a severe impact on his mental health and resulted in him taking a hiatus.[9][10] Masae subsequently deleted her videos featuring Emile from her channel, and went on a hiatus as well. On April 16th, Emile posted a statement on his account of each incident and added his perspective on his former relation with Masae, requesting the community to not misinterpret her words or continue to bother Masae regarding thier relationship.[11] Masae privately discussed with Emile to release another statement the next day confirming Emile's account and also requested the community to stop unsolicitly asking about their relationship and to not send harassment to either one.[12]
