Matthew Walsh (born: July 18, 1986), better known as Matt Walsh, is an American right-wing political commentator and podcast host. He is a part of The Daily Wire and starred in the mockumentary What Is a Woman? He has been labelled as "Transphobe of the Year" by The New Republic.[2]
Personal life[]
Walsh is a practicing Catholic and resides in Nashville, Tennessee. He is married to Alissa Ann Walsh (née Linnemann), whom he met through eHarmony. The couple has six children, which includes two sets of twins. Alissa Walsh has shared that she has experienced seven miscarriages in her life.
Career[]
Walsh commenced his career as a co-host on talk radio, appearing on The Matt and Crank Program at WZBH 93.5 FM in Georgetown, Delaware, from early 2010 to August 1, 2011. He later relocated to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and joined WGMD 92.7 FM, where he remained for less than a year. In 2012, he moved to Lexington, Kentucky, and joined NewsRadio 630 WLAP. Around the same time, he launched The Matt Walsh Blog, a website where he expressed his conservative views on various topics. In December 2013, after his radio show was canceled, Walsh decided to leave radio entirely and focus solely on blogging.
From October 2014, Walsh became associated with the conservative media outlet Blaze Media. He also contributed to HuffPost and began writing for The Daily Wire in October 2017. Over the years, he made appearances on various TV shows, including Tucker Carlson Tonight, The Ingraham Angle, Fox and Friends, Dr. Phil, and the podcast The Joe Rogan Experience.
Starting in April 2018, Walsh hosted The Matt Walsh Show on YouTube, airing on weekdays with an hour-long duration. The show reportedly generated significant revenue, earning $100,000 per month from advertisements, according to Walsh. The show was temporarily demonetized on Youtube and did not air for an extended period in 2023.
Political views[]
Walsh's views have been described as right-wing, conservative, but sometimes far-right and reactionary. He sarcastically identifies himself as "Theocratic Fascist, Best-Selling Children's Author" in his Twitter bio.
Abortion[]
He is anti-abortion and pro-life, saying that "life is precious".[3][4] He supported Alabama's 2019 bill that outlaws abortion in all cases, including rape and incest, as he believes forcing 12-year-old rape victims to carry to term would help them get their crime discovered and increase the rapist's accountability, and abortion would otherwise destroy the evidence and encourage the rapist to continue molesting without consequence.[5]
Colonialism[]
In 2023 Matt released a video in which he stated that those who colonized the United States were "heroes" who should be celebrated for their "courage" in crossing the Atlantic Ocean and populating America, and that the colonization of America was "noble". Walsh has stated that the United States has hypocritically condemned colonization in its past, while engaging in "cultural colonization... when Western governments fly the pride flag on their embassies and export the LGBT agenda and gender ideology into Africa and other regions that don't want it."[6]
Vaccines[]
Though Walsh has asserted that he had a neutral stance on vaccines,[7] Walsh has accused the children's program Sesame Street of indoctrinating children. He suggested that the program was "promoting drug use" and that Big Bird "had the voice of a 'child molester'" when encouraging children to get vaccinated.[8] Furthermore, he shared a video explaining his decision not to vaccinate his children against COVID-19, including a segment in which he promoted hesitance, uncertainty, and doubt about the potential long-term effects of the vaccine.[9]
Controversy[]
Transphobia[]
He is best known for his opposition to gender theory, social transitioning, and gender-affirming surgeries, especially on minors, and considers trans advocates and supporters to be "biology deniers".[10]
Walsh endorsed a legislation aimed at prohibiting the transition of teenagers, simplifying it as a "bill prohibiting the genital mutilation of children."[11] He characterized gender-affirmation surgery as "surgical mutilation," accused parents of transgender children of exploiting them for attention, and asserted that older children wanting to transition face challenges because subjecting them to therapy would be "painful."[12] He also advocated for making transition surgery illegal for everyone, expressing approval for Russia's implementation of such policies in 2023, including a ban on trans adoption.[13][14]
In a video for The Daily Wire, Walsh equated gender-affirming care to sexual abuse, stating that a child undergoing hormone therapy and body alteration is being "sexually violated" in a manner comparable to molestation or rape. He likened doctors who provide gender-affirming care to children to Nazi scientists,[15] suggesting that they should face execution or lifelong imprisonment.[16][17]
In 2021, Walsh rented a home in Loudoun County to participate in a school board meeting related to the school's residents and students. The focal point of his concern was allowing transgender individuals to identify with their gender and mandating staff to use their consistently asserted gender in communication with parents.[18] During his speech, he criticized the school board as poisonous while acknowledging his lack of scientific qualification to comment on gender controversies.[19]
In late 2021, Walsh authored a children's book titled "Johnny the Walrus," depicting a story about a boy who imagines he is a walrus and undergoes surgical alteration after facing public scrutiny. The book's comparison of the boy's situation to trans-identifying children's situations generated controversy. Despite this controversial nature, the book topped the LGBTQ+ category on Amazon as part of a troll campaign.
In 2022, Walsh released a popular and controversial documentary produced by the Daily Wire. The documentary, titled "What is a Woman?" released in June 2022. It received divided reviews, being praised in conservative publications and harshly criticized in liberal sources for its alleged reliance on "pseudoscience, logical fallacies, and misinformation."[20][21] The film has a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes.[22]
In early 2023, Walsh testified in support of a bill banning "child mutilation" (gender-affirming care) at a committee hearing. When asked about his qualifications, Walsh evaded the question and focused on discussing "chemical castration," which he inaccurately represents as hormone/puberty blockers. He argued that trans individuals should only receive treatment until the age of 25, claiming it as the age of maturity. However, when questioned about raising the age of consent and the age to buy firearms, he opposed such measures, raising concerns about the inconsistency in his views.[23]
Teenage pregnancy and Consent[]
In June 2021, during one of Walsh's satirical children's book reviews, in reference to a book intended to teach children a contemporary view of consent (the restriction of physical affection, such as hugging or kissing, to situations where verbal permission is given), Walsh described the contents of the book as "woke," and controversially jested, "I violate my kids' consent all the time, in the sense that I force them to do things they don't want to do... clean their room... is that forced labor? Is that slavery?".[24]
In October 2022, Media Matters for America, a left-wing watchdog group, discovered a decade-old clip from a shock-jock radio program Walsh hosted, where he expressed the belief that teenage pregnancy was acceptable as long as the girl is married. Similarly, in November 2022, The Serf Times uncovered another clip in which Walsh shared troubling perspectives on rape and consent, even defending convicted or alleged child sex abusers like defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.[25]
Moreover, Walsh has been documented stating that 13-year-old should be the age of consent and they should be considered adults and dismissed the idea of adolescence as a "modern plague." He also made controversial remarks suggesting that Teenage girls still in high school have a strong innate desire to settle down and start a family, both biologically and metaphysically.[26]
