Alex, better known online as Mikasacus (or Mika), is a YouTube commentator, reviewer, author, and artist. He makes music under the name Alex Unknown outside of YouTube and has released a book under the alias A.F. Earnest.[1] Mika reviews everyday things in a comedic fashion, such as water, air, and food[2] and is a member of the Sleep Deprived Podcast. He has also been featured as a guest on two episodes of the Please Stop Talking Podcast.[3][4]

About[]

Mika's videos can be characterized by their absurdist and comedic, or serious and sometimes philosophical tones. Mika himself described his videos on one episode of the Sleep Deprived Podcast as "unfocused variety".[citation needed]

History[]

Mikasacus created his channel on May 17, 2016.[5] Shortly after this (May 30, 2016), he released his first public video: McCree's Last High Noon. It is not clear if this video was actually the first on the channel as – at the end of the video before-mentioned video – there is a preview for a game-play video that cannot be found on his channel.[6] This panel is used by Mika in many of his old videos thereafter to show clips of the previous video from the one being watched, leading to the uncertainty.

How To Actually[]

How To Actually is a series of part-informative, part-satirical videos on a variety of topics. It began on June 3, 2016, with How To Actually Play Mei. The series started with a focus on Overwatch character guides though this focus eventually shifted away to anything from video editing to rapping. The series continued to run on an inconsistent schedule between other videos until January 6, 2018, with How To Actually Be A Rapper (Existential Crisis Edition). After which it went on an unannounced, indefinite hiatus.

Animatic[]

On June 17, 2016 – Mika uploaded his first animatic: Dargons - Overwatch Animatic. He did not upload another animatic until the Got Legs series.

Fairy Tales[]

Fairy Tales is the name of Mikasacus' book of short stories. It is relevant to the history of his YouTube channel because two of it's chapters were posted pre-release of the book as videos on the channel; those being, The Pharmacist on April 24, 2017, and The Gravedigger on June 7, 2017. Additionally, the entire book was released for free as an audiobook in the form of a video on the channel.[7]

The Dot.[]

The Dot. is a series of 6 nuanced, possibly-connected short stories narrated by Mikasacus alongside a variety of visuals. The series began on July 1, 2016, with The Usual. and ended on September 30, 2016, with The White Room.. This was the first story-type content to be uploaded to the channel.

Original Soundtrack (OST) Analyses[]

On August 26, 2017, Mikasacus released the first video in his OST series: Sonic and the Zeitgeist - Sonic Mania OST. This series, while never officially being stated to have been discontinued, has not been updated since the 6th upload: The Sound of Adventure - Hollow Knight OST on October 6, 2018.

Sleep Deprived Podcast[]

After meeting fellow YouTuber jschlatt through a comment on his copy that video. The two became acquainted, shortly after this (specifically July 22, 2017)[8] they decided to launch the Sleep Deprived Podcast; a comedy podcast which utilizes dry and absurdist humor to make jokes and discusses some serious, contemporary issues, usually in a non-serious way.

The Biweekly[]

The Biweekly was a series of short videos made in January 2018 where Mika responded to viewer questions and edit requests posted as replies in a relevent twitter post each episode. There were only ever 3 videos and all of them have since been unlisted.

Dot R.[]

Dot R. is a continuation of The Dot.'s style; i.e., 6 nuanced, possibly-connected short-stories.[9] The series began on February 21, 2018 with You Are Trapped In Space. and ended on July 21, 2018 with Let go..

Actual Garbage[]

Actual Garbage is the longest series Mika has created. With 13 videos, it is an ongoing series that began on April 14, 2018, with Super Smash Bros. Is Actual Garbage. It is characterized by it's ironic or mocking premise. Not one video in the series has been a legitimate hate piece; rather, they have always praised the game in question or criticized the most useless small details which nobody would actually care about normally, more-often-than-not to make a mockery of biased or incorrect critics (haters).

Change in Video Style[]

Around mid-to-late-2018 – Mikasacus' video style fundamentally changed from that of mainly footage and b-roll visuals to mainly pixelated-graphics (with the earliest public example being RuneScape OST). The reason for this is unknown.

You Are Doing Your Best[]

You Are Doing Your Best is a series of "Streams of Consciousness"[10] where Mika gives positive, motivational advice while reflecting on his own experiences while (what appears to be) Gran Turismo game-play plays on screen.

Honest Reviews[]

Honest Reviews is an ongoing video series started on February 29, 2020, with Being Tired: An Honest Review. Similar to How To Actually, the series can be characterized by it's part-informative, part-satirical style. It is a series where a variety of absurd things are reviewed (e.g. air and being tired) with Mika giving his thoughts on them and recommending for or against them at the end.

Got Legs?[]

Got Legs is an ongoing series of animatics. It began with got legs? - loser on March 13, 2021.

Trivia[]

  • The Dot. was adapted into a play and performed by Modicum Theatre for Fringe World 2018 in Australia.[11] "Ryan Nicolson" is credited with it's adaptation.[12]
  • Mika uses Hitfilm Express to edit his videos.[13]
  • Mika's new video style is believed by some to be inspired by the cut-scenes in Hyper Light Drifter. This idea comes form the fact that Mika has shown a fondness for the game in the past[14] and that the two are visually similar.[15]
  • Mika has only once stated the proper pronunciation of "Mikasacus".[16] Prior to this video, the reason he never stated this was unknown but it had become a running joke of his character.
