Hallo niece and nephew, it's Uncle Roger!

―mrnigelng as Uncle Roger

Nigel Ng Kin-ju (born: March 15, 1991 (1991-03-15) [age 33]), better known as mrnigelng (also known as Nigel Ng), is a Malaysian comedian and actor based in Los Angeles. He became viral in early 2020 as a result of his character, Uncle Roger, a portrayal of a middle-aged Asian man, reacting to Asian cooking videos.

Personal life and career[]

Nigel Ng was born on 15 March 1991 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Malaysian Chinese parents of Hokkien ancestry. He studied engineering and philosophy at Northwestern University in Illinois, graduating in 2014.[1]

Before becoming a stand-up comedian, he moved to the UK to work as a data scientist and has a GitHub page. Having enjoyed pursuing comedy in clubs and festivals while studying at university, he eventually decided to become a full-time stand-up comedian not long after.[2]

In July 2020, he became viral as a result of a video criticizing a controversial BBC Food video of Hersha Patel cooking egg fried rice, where the method of cooking the rice in the video was widely panned by many Asian viewers for not washing the rice before cooking and for using a sieve. In his critique video, Nigel assumed the comedic persona of "Uncle Roger", a middle-aged Asian man with a pronounced Malaysian Chinese accent and prides himself on many East Asian stereotypes. After his video went viral, both he and Patel went on BBC together, and did a cooking collaboration not long after.

Since then, Nigel continues to assume the Uncle Roger persona with a variety of video critiques, such as reacting to cooking videos, working at restaurants, and visiting places related to Asian heritage.

He previously lived in London, England,[3] but moved to Los Angeles on around 2023.[4]

Uncle Roger[]

Since becoming viral in July 2020, Nigel uses the Uncle Roger persona as a depiction of a middle-aged Asian man with pronounced Malaysian Chinese accent (pronouncing words like "video" as "weejio", using verbal exclamations like "haiyaa" and "fuiyoh") and embodies many East Asian stereotypes, such as wearing bright colored polo t-shirts, using phone waist bags, and an exaggerated obsession with the use of monosodium glutamate (MSG) in cooking. He is seen to love flames as much as he hates induction stoves.

He occasionally makes jokes about harsh Asian parenting and being "dumped" by his "ex-wife Auntie Helen". He often mentions and rants about Jamie Oliver (whom he often refers to as 'Jamie Olive Oil') after reacting to a video where Jamie makes egg fried rice, which traumatized him badly, as well as his hatred of chili jam, and the excess use of olive oil in any Asian foods he's recreating. A lot of the time he will always mock Jamie Oliver whenever he gets the opportunity to do so.

On January 7th, 2024, Uncle Roger discovered that Jamie Oliver had made a lamb curry song, to which he found Benny Blanco to roast him with. The video of Jamie Oliver's song included a link to Jamie Oliver's songs, to which both Benny and Uncle Roger bought the domain to promote the diss track. A week later, Benny produced a diss track for Uncle Roger to diss on people he had reacted to so far, who had incorrectly cooked Asian foods.[5]

Trivia[]

  • On November 2nd, 2020, Nigel has been physically assaulted by a stranger in London. This led to his lips being bled as well as a bruise on the corner of his mouth. It was believed to be a 'random COVID racism attack'.[6]
    • Additionally, the situation was later used as a subject for his comedy show, The Haiyaa Special.[7]
  • He is a fan of Nijisanji VTuber Mysta Rias and the two have had several interactions on Twitter.
  • Whenever Uncle Roger makes a dirty joke, the notorious PornHub intro would be played in the background, accompanied with a pink filter. This is followed by Uncle Roger saying "Sorry, children" without his Malaysian Chinese accent.
    • Whenever Uncle Roger also make comments about Auntie Helen, the sounds of rain were played in the background accompanied with a blue filter as Uncle Roger is lamenting.
  • Uncle Roger's favorite K-Pop group is "TWICE", as the clip of TWICE's music videos are played whenever Uncle Rogers says a line that is the same as their song's lyrics.
    • Additionally, music videos of other K-Pop groups also appeared in certain videos as well.
  • Uncle Roger often gives the "Uncle" or "Auntie" title to those (mostly chefs) who impressed him. Otherwise, he refers to both fans and chefs as his "Nieces" and "Nephews".
    • However, according to Nick DiGiovanni, when somebody with the "Uncle" or "Auntie" title did something to break Uncle Roger, he takes away the Uncle or Auntie title from them, making it seem hard to get the title and even harder to be consistent with it.
    • He also refers to people he reacted to as '(item) fuckboi/fuckgirl' when the person he's reacting to turns out, has more than one item of a kind (such as Gordon Ramsay, who has more than 70 woks, and was affectionately referred to as 'wok fuckboi'.)
  • Uncle Roger doesn't like vegetables, claiming they taste like "sad".
    • However, he likes certain vegetables, such as garlic, shallots, mushrooms, and kimchi because he claims they're the only vegetables that don't taste like sad.
    • Additionally, he stated that lettuce tasted much better when it's cooked, rather than being served raw.
  • Uncle Roger childhood snack is "Yan Yan Chocolate".[8]
  • Ever since the video of Uncle Roger reviewing Andy Cooks's chicken rice, he started to develop a pet peeve of the cameraman aiming up at the face of the person in the video, rather than aiming it at the food.

Quotes[]
