Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones (born: September 14, 1973
), better known professionally as Nas, is an American rapper known for his music.Early life[]
Jones was born on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York City. His father, Olu Dara, is a jazz musician, and his mother, Fannie Ann, was a postal worker. Jones has a brother, Jabari Fret, who is also a rapper, rapping under the name Jungle.
Career[]
In 1989, Jones met up with producer Large Professor, and went to a studio. Jones would sometimes go to the recording booth and make material when there isn't a session happening. In 1992, Nas was secured a record deal by MC Serch, the label being Columbia Records. He released Halftime while being named as Nasty Nas.
Starting with various mentions, criticism, and references on many songs, Jones had a feud with popular musician Jay-Z. Jay released the song Takeover in 2001, which was about the feud. Nas responded with the song Ether, comparing Jay to various characters. After many songs, callouts, disputes, and criticism, Nas and Jay reconciled with each other in October 2005 during Jay’s "I Declare War" concert.
