Nerd Nite is a monthly global presentation series, which started in 2003. The monthly events are held in public venues where 2-3 presenters share a topic of personal interest or expertise while the audience drinks.[1]
At Nerd Nite, volunteers give PowerPoint presentations on their favourite topics.[2] Each event has three speakers talking for 20-30 minutes, followed by questions and answers.[3] Nerd Nite was founded by Chris Balakrishnan.[4] Matt Wasowski is in charge of the organisation.[5]
History[]
In 2003, Chris Balakrishnan was a graduate student in Boston. For three months a year, he travelled to Cameroon to study indigobirds, and was missed at his local bar, the Midway Café.[6] The bartender suggested Chris show a slide show at the bar about his time in Cameroon. Chris did not initially think it was a good idea. He held it anyway, with a few other graduate students. This became the first Nerd Nite. He continued giving several talks a year at bars in Boston until 2006, when Wasowski adopted the idea and took it to New York City, where Nerd Nite evolved into its current form and spread across the country.[7] Soon the New York event was selling around 300 tickets each month. People who'd been to Nerd Nite in New York and Boston moved around the world and brought it to their new home towns. Nerd Nites are held in bars, because Chris has stated that conferences and TED talks “can be so stuffy.”[8]
Chris attributes Nerd Nite’s appeal to the fact that: “People really enjoy drinking, obviously, but maybe they are sick of the bar scene. Maybe this is also a different way for them to engage with challenging topics. People want to learn, and this is a new way to learn.” The events are often described as “like the Discovery Channel with beer.”[9]
Some events also include speed dating.[10]
