―Nerdrotic's outro

Gary Buechler, better known online as Nerdrotic, is a far-right American[1] YouTuber and commentary content creator that specializes in covering the good, the bad, and the ugly in current pop culture. Gary is a former comic book retailer, who has an affinity for genre media such as, Lord of the Rings on Amazon, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and Star Trek/Star Wars.[citation needed] His channel, Nerdrotic, hosts a live stream called Friday Night Tights, The Real BBC and the Nerdrotic Nooner that gleans thousands of views weekly. FNT has a revolving panel of regulars, and special guests, that cover the latest in entertainment news.[2]

Content[]

Originally a channel dedicated to streaming discussions on various TV shows, Nerdrotic became one of the leading figures in the movement known as "The Fandom Menace", a community against perceived left-wing politicization of fiction, as well as the supposed mistreatment of fans by corporations and media outlets. He holds a particularly strong grudge against The Walt Disney Company and those who continue to support their media.

Videos often report on pop culture news, both positive and negative. He frequently highlights how the press is often dissonant with the viewers (such as their negative ratings to fan-favorite series The Orville) and the divisive use of identity politics in fictional stories.[citation needed]

Nerdrotic is also credited for coining the term "access media", referring to the industry that refuse to criticize entertainment companies (most notably Disney) so as to get special privileges and remain in favor. He believes that the access media often labels online critics as "ists", "isms" and "phobes" to dismiss legitimate criticism of any given work, creating an ongoing culture war as a result.[citation needed]

Nerdrotic is a prominent live streamer, and has multiple series of live streams dedicated to discussion of pop culture, and has appeared in streams by other channels as well. His series include: Friday Night Tights, The Nerdrotic Nooner, The Real BBC, and Forbidden Frontier.

Friday Night Tights[]

Friday Night Tights is a weekly podcast each Friday between a collective of different YouTubers hosted on Nerdrotic's main channel and was co-created with Geeks + Gamers. The original main cast was rounded out by HeelvsBabyface, Jeremy from Geeks + Gamers, Midnight's Edge, Comix Division, RK Outpost, and OMB Reviews.[citation needed]

Since then, Midnight's Edge has left as a main cast member, while former guests 1/4 Black Garrett and Chrissie Mayr, alongside producer Xray Girl, have since joined as part of the main cast. Shadiversity joined as a main host in 2023. HeelvsBabyface left in 2024, and was replaced by Disparu as a host.[citation needed]

Joining them is a rotating cast of guests, which includes other high-profile YouTubers, as well as journalists, creators, and political commentators.

Friday Night Tights is essentially a comedic discussion forum about recent and upcoming events, often related to geek culture (most commonly superhero media, hence the name, but also science fiction and fantasy) like comic books, television, movies, video games, as well as politics, and speculating the future based on recent developments. They also engage with the viewers during this time by responding to questions and comments.[citation needed]

Friday Night Tights has garnered notable attention through viral marketing and positive word of mouth, with views each week averaging well over 100,000 views in total, and more recent episodes reaching over 15,000 live viewers.

During both San Diego and New York Virtual Comic-Con in 2020, more tuned in to watch Friday Night Tights than almost all videos streamed on the Comic-Con YouTube page, which consists of celebrities and industry professionals.

Friday Night Tights headlined its first major convention appearance at Anime Matsuri 2022 in Houston, Texas. The attendees included main cast regulars Nerdrotic, Geeks + Gamers, RK Outpost, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Comix Division, as well as frequent guest stars Rekieta Law, YoungRippa59, and Yellow Flash. At their panel, they recorded an episode in front of a live audience, and interacted directly with the large crowd of attendees.

The Nerdrotic Nooner[]

The Nerdrotic Nooner started off as a solo live stream hosted by Nerdrotic without any co-hosts or guests apart from the chat held on afternoons. This series is focused solely on his perspective on pop culture, and how he interacts with the community, taking questions and answers from the chat.

I has evolved to having a co-host, Chris Gore, founder of Film Threat. He was the producer of several TV shows like Attack of the Show. He has also released a great documentary highlighting the history of Attack of the Show in Attack of the Doc.

The Real BBC[]

A collaboration between Nerdrotic (American), with HeelvsBabyface (Britsh/English), and MauLer (British/Welsh). The Real BBC is another pop culture forum that focuses on news from both sides of the Atlantic. The name itself is a potshot at the current iteration of The BBC. Originally, it was solely a collaboration between Nerdrotic and HeelvsBabyface, but MauLer was later made permanent co-hosts alongside them.

Forbidden Frontier[]

For the skeptic and anyone interested in ancient civilization, UFOs/UAPs, the weird and extraordinary woo woo happenings that occur around us that we sometimes cannot explain. The show is hosted by Gary, 1/4 Black Garrett and Adam Crigler from The Crigler Show. Gary has been interested in these variety of topics for decades and is an enthusiast to share his knowledge and discover new findings with his co-hosts who are newer to this.

About[]

Gary Buechler was born in San Diego and had lived in California for most of his life. A longtime fan of comic books and geek culture, he ran a comic book store in San Francisco from 2003 to 2013 called The Comics Outpost, and frequently mentions that in his videos. He's married and has a son. In the past, Gary struggled with cocaine addiction and was for a time involved in the manufacturing and sale of meth, but has since recovered after serving a stint in prison (which he cites as the point where he truly valued his freedom and liberty, after learning first hand what it was not to have it). Gary is a supporter of Amnesty International and The Trevor Project, as well as a staunch supporter of controversial US president Donald Trump.

As of 2020, Gary was in the process of moving out of California and into a Red state, to escape the "regime" that's running the California government. This came to light after the COVID-19 shutdown, and the oppressive acts that followed, which turned San Francisco into what he calls a "politically correct dystopia". Several times on his channel he has cited as a major factor in his decision to move the fact his wife lost her small business as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions in that state. Since 2021, he has completed his official relocation to San Antonio, Texas.

His Twitter profile describes himself as a "YouTuber, ex-felon, LIBERTY Lovin' collector of DVD's & Action Figures."

Controversies[]

Blue Beetle review & Pillar of Garbage's video[]

On August 22, 2023, Nerdrotic Daily released a video titled "Let's TACO BOUT Blue Beetle! (SPOILERS) Featuring MauLer & Disparu" which is a review of the Blue Beetle movie.[3] On August 29, Remezcla released an article with the title "‘Blue Beetle’ Video Review Gets Dragged for Racist Criticisms — Here’s What Happened"[4] which features many clips of outrage against Nerdrotic Daily's video. On October 18, 2023, Pillar of Garbage released a video titled "Let's Taco Bout Nerdrotic". Pillar of Garbage provides proof that Nerdrotic lied about the contents of the Blue Beetle movie.[5]

Nerdrotic, discussing the "bus slicing scene" from the trailer, Nerdrotic says that the shield is cool but criticized the film for never having Jaime use it again.[6]

Ryan Kinel: ...testing its shield thing[6]

AZ: Yeah, they wanted to show you things which they wouldn't use in the film[6]

Nerdrotic: Later on, when they were particularly useful, yknow, that probably would have been very useful.[6]

Pillar of Garbage in his video, then shows Blue Beetle using the shield several times.[7] Pillar of Garbage claims that Friday Night Tights is "shot-through with dog whistling"[8]
