Nicolas "Nick" Robinson[1] (born: 1989–1990 [age 35–36]), also known online as babylonian, is an American YouTuber, former journalist, and producer who creates investigative journalism style documentaries on subjects such as gaming and Japanese media.
History[]
Although Robinson has been uploading YouTube videos since October 16, 2006, he kicked off his personal career as a video producer at Polygon in February 2015. Amongst the two years he worked there, his most recognized role was as a co-host for the YouTube series titled "Car Boys", which revolved around him and fellow Polygon employee Griffin Mcelroy playing through a driving game called BeamNG.drive.[3]
He parted ways with Polygon soon after he was accused of sexual harassment.[4][5]
Before his departure from Polygon for in August 2017, Robinson had uploaded a few videos that sparked his YouTube channels popularity, such as "How to Beat a Walmart Security Tag" and "my apartment burnt down so i made a funny video about it".[6][7] The first noteworthy video essay style content he had made that lead to the greater success of his channel was "The Domino's ad that vanished from YouTube", which gained 1.1 million views.[8] After taking notice of the following he had gained from this format, his creations continued to expand upon it until slowly leading YouTube to becoming his full time job.
Nick Robinson is also known for debunking mysteries in video games. The mysteries he has solved include "The Nintendo character with zero Google results" where he figures out the mystery of Pappy van Poodle.[9] Another was "How I solved Super Monkey Ball's biggest mystery" where he figures out who was the voice announcer in the original Super Monkey Ball games.[10]
He often criticizes SEGA for ruining great games brand by repetitively making the same kind of levels without innovation and completely deplete the fresh fun of playing the game for the first time (e.g. Sonic the Hedgehog) while also decreasing the difficulty of the game thus making it far less challenging and interesting to play (e.g. Super Monkey Ball). He even once went To Japan to protest in the SEGA HQ by sticking a deep fried version of one of the Super Monkey Ball's main characters GonGon which actually violates the ToS of the game. There is no aftermath to this event. Nevertheless, he believes that SEGA will one day choose a great game development director and fix this issue for good.
He bought the lost McDonald’s ECDP training DS game at a Japanese auction and dumped the ROM to preserve it. The game was a training program for McDonalds employees in Japan to speed up training in the workplace. The game is incredibly rare and only a few copies are known to exist. Nick had to jump through a lot of hoops to bring the game from Japan to the United States due to the COVID-19 pandemic (as Japan not only did not allow shipping outside the country, but foreigners and locals were not allowed to go outside the get back in the country, although his friend who lived in Tokyo got the DS and the game outside the country as he was granted permission to leave the country) and getting a 3DS with video capture to showcase high quality footage of the game (from a retired 3DS modder). Another reason why he wanted to dump the ROM of the game was because the person who beat him to the race to be the 1st to play the game, Cody, had stated multiple times that he refused to dump the ROM of the game.[11]
