Dr Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen[citation needed], better known online as Nordic Animism, is a YouTuber who makes videos about animism.
Personal life[]
Rune is a historian of religion. He uses animist anthropology to open sustainability perspectives on Nordic cultural history and religions.[1] He was educated at the Universities of Uppsala and Copenhagen. Rune has lived in many countries and done fieldwork in a number of contemporary, primarily Afro-descendant, religions.[2]
Rune grew up on a farm in east Jutland, Denmark.[3] As a child, Rune learned about the pre-Christian Nordic worldview from his grandmother.[4] He has three children.[5]
YouTube[]
Rune uploaded his first video, Hermon Film Trailer, on March 3, 2009.[6] He has uploaded videos in Danish.[7]
The Runic Animist Calendar[]
This calendar introduces seasonal animism from Northern Europe. It includes the runic calendar, the luni-solar reckoning, and has folkloric and Heathen holidays marked with traditional primstaff marks.[8] Rune started working on the calendar project around mid- 2016, and sent the first version to his friends in late 2017.[9]
The calendar has a manual book written by Rune, titled, The Nordic Animist Year. It gives the background to the calendar, the Heathen holidays, luni-solar reckoning and how animist traditions are reinvented in seasonal folklore. The information in the book is generic and can be used every year. It is 170 pages long, and has colour illustrations.[10]
Raven totem[]
Rune is working to reintroduce the Raven flag “as a marker of kinship with the land among people in the Northern hemisphere.” He has researched the Raven Totem as a part of mythology in the Northern hemisphere. The contemporary design was created by a group of four people, including Rune. The design “combines a number of archaeological finds into a contemporary Raven design that emphasizes the Raven as totemic.”[11] Rune has described the totem as “a trans-ethnic symbol of kinship between humanity and nature.”[12] In 2021, Rune gave a presentation for Sacred Earth Activism, on The Raven as an Activist symbol.[13]
