The Olympics are a sporting event held every two years swapping between winter and summer, with a variety of events/disciplines.

History[]

8th century BC[]

The first Ancient Olympic Games were held in 776 BC.[1]

4th century BC[]

The last Ancient Olympic Games were held in 393 BC.[2]

19 century BC[]

On 6 April 1896, the first Modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece.[3]

On 1 July 1904, the 3rd Summer Olympics were held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. This is the first time that the Olympic Games were held outside of Europe.[4]

On 22 April 1906, the Intercalated Games were held in Athens, Greece. It's now not recognized by the IOC.[5]

The 1916 Summer Olympics, which was scheduled to be held in Berlin, was cancelled due to World War I.[6]

On 25 January 1924, the first Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France.[7]

The 1940 and 1944 Summer Olympics was cancelled due to World War II.[8][9]

On 22 November 1956, the 16th Summer Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia and Stockholm, Sweden. This is the first time that the Olympic Games were held outside of Europe and North America, the first games held in Oceania, and the first games held in the Southern Hemisphere.[10]

On 10 October 1964, the 18th Summer Olympics were held in Tokyo, Japan. This is the first time that the Olympic Games were held outside of Europe, North America and Oceania.[11]

A boycott would happen at the 1980 Summer Olympics, when it was held in Moscow, Soviet Union. The reason of this boycott is due to the Soviet–Afghan War.[12]

21st century[]

On 10 January 2006, the Olympics created their YouTube channel. The first video was uploaded on January 19, 2010, titled "Wang Xin & Chen Ruolin Win Synchronised 10m Diving Gold - Beijing 2008 Olympics".[13]

On 5 August 2016, the 31st Summer Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the first time that the Olympic Games were held outside of Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia.[14]

  • Africa is the only continent that hasn't hosted the Olympics.[26]
