Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11)

Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11) is a proposed Canadian bill that revolves around the regulation of online streaming services in Canada such as YouTube, Netflix, etc., and this bill's goal is to have Canadian citizens view Canadian media. This bill is governed and revolves around Canadian Heritage, and this bill is generally considered controversial on YouTube due to the government changing the recommendations of Canadian viewers. The bill's status can be viewed at the Canadian Government's website,^[1] and the bill can be viewed in English and French for the first reading.^[2]

J.J. McCullough spoke about this bill in the Canadian House of Commons committee meetings, and YouTube Creators would further explain how this legislation would affect the experience of users on the service.^[3] McCullough mentioned that some people see him as a leader in terms of opposing the bill.^[4] When the Bill was still in the Senate, he made a video describing speaking at the Canadian Senate.^[5] In the Senate, there were other YouTubers such as U m a m i in opposition to the bill,^[6] and Gregory "Jreg" Guevara showed up to help vlog J.J's walk to the Senate.^[7] However, Wyatt Sharpe spoke in the Senate as well, but he does not support or oppose the bill.^[8]

The Bill was passed by the Senate on February 2, 2023 and received Royal Assent on April 27, 2023.^[9]

However, J.J. McCullough spoke with the CRTC after the bill passed.^[10] However, there is a chance the bill's effects would not be fully implemented and repealed due to a high likelihood Pierre Poilievre becomes elected due to his opposition against the bill.^[11]
