The PGA Tour is the main organizer of professional golf tours in the United States. Established by the Professional Golf Association of America in 1929 and separated into its own entity in 1968, PGA Tour organizes its own eponymous tour alongside multiple specialized and international tours.

History[]

The Professional Golf Association of America was founded in 1916. PGA Tour still recognizes wins from before 1929 as being "PGA Tour" despite the organization not yet being founded. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, multiple state open tournaments began and professional golf started to gain more popularity. The tour of all these state opens, known as the "Circuit", began becoming more formalized in the late 1920s. A tour committee was formed and the modern PGA Tour was founded.

In the 1960s with the expansion of television, golf tours suddenly became more profitable than ever. This lead to a dispute between tour players and the PGA of America. Tour Players wanted an increased wage because of the increase demand, but PGA wanted the increased revenue to instead be invested into the growth of the sport at a local level. At the end of the 1968 major, several tour players protested their venue. This lead to PGA Tour being separated by the end of the year into it's own entity entirely.
