오빤 강남스타일 (Oppan Gangnam Style)

―PSY's refrain in Gangnam Style (2012)

Park Jae-sang (born: December 31, 1977 (1977-12-31) [age 46]), better known by his stage name PSY, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, record producer and television personality. Jae is most known for his hit single "Gangnam Style" as the music video for the song is primarily recognized as the former most viewed YouTube video of all time, surpassing Justin Bieber's "Baby" on November 24, 2012 until being surpassed by Wiz Khalifa's and Charlie Puth's Paul Walker tribute music video "See You Again" on July 10, 2017. Gangnam Style has received over 4 billion views as of June 1, 2021. Jae is also famous for his popular follow up to Gangnam Style, Gentleman. As of June 1, 2021, his channel, officialpsy has gained over 14.9 million subscribers, making it the 10th most subscribed channel in South Korea, and the 3,844th most subscribed channel on YouTube.

History[]

Jae started his YouTube channel on October 3, 2010, with his first video being "PSY's INTERVIEW - PSY IS BACK" which has over 530K views as of May 25, 2022. Prior to the release of Gangnam Style, the channel had less than 100,000 subscribers.

Gangnam Style[]

On July 15, 2012, after showing some teasers, the music video for Gangnam Style was uploaded to YouTube. The video quickly gained popularity as many celebrities began tweeting the song early on. The video almost instantly became a worldwide phenomenon, with many parodies of the song being uploaded on YouTube. Despite the video being liked by millions, it received backlash with many people criticizing the video, saying that Gangnam Style should not be permitted to be seen by children and that Jae is talentless, dumb, inappropriate, and undeserving of his success. Despite the criticism, the video currently has over 4.4 billion views and over 24 million likes, which is eight times more than the amount of dislikes it currently has.

Post-Gangnam Style[]

After Gangnam Style became a massive success, Jae continued to make music before his YouTube channel went inactive on December 2019. Before the channel went inactive, Jae made songs such as Daddy and Gentleman, both of which gained lots of views on YouTube, with Gentleman being Jae's second song to reach 1 billion views. On August 2021, the channel went active again with a video being uploaded on the channel, but after the video was uploaded, the channel went inactive again before it went active for a second time on 2022. On that same year, Jae released his album Psy 9th which contained his song That That. The song became highly popular upon its release on April 29, 2022, gaining more than 170 million views in less than a month, making it Jae's most successful song of 2022. Jae also made other songs in 2022, including Celeb and Happier.
