Abigail Thorn (born: April 24, 1993 (1993-04-24) [age 31]),[1] better known online as Philosophy Tube, is an English YouTuber who makes videos discussing political and social issues through the lens of philosophy.

Personal life[]

Abigail was born in Northumberland, England on April 24, 1993. After coming of age, she enrolled in philosophy at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where she began to post videos about what she was learning in her lectures on YouTube. She earned a master's degree in acting at East 15 Acting School in Loughton, Essex before moving to London. On October 28, 2019, she came out as bisexual in her video Queer✨, and she also came out on Twitter.[2]

She also has a second job working as an actress, perhaps accounting for the more dramatic nature of parts of her videos. In her YouTube video on the topic, she admitted to having had suicidal thoughts for many years and making two attempts on her life: one at the age of seventeen, and a second in February 2018. On January 30, 2021, Thorn came out as a transgender woman.[3][4][5][6]

Content[]

Her videos usually discuss a particular topic through a context of philosophy from a left-leaning perspective. Though her videos often have a format similar to that of a lecture or a blog, they can often take on a more stylized nature featuring dramatized cutaway scenes to illustrate her points.

History[]

Thorn joined YouTube in May 2013, in response to university tuition fees tripling in the United Kingdom, making higher education less attainable. Thorn made it her mission to "[give] away a philosophy degree for free", to make philosophy more accessible.[7][8]
