Forever and for always

―Pinterest’s slogan

Pinterest is an American social media service known for its design to share and save images, also known on the website as ideas. It was founded in 2009 by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp.

History[]

The idea for Pinterest was originated from an earlier app by Silbermann and Sciarra called Tote. It would be used as a virtual replacement for paper catalogues. The app struggled, and was later an idea for Pinterest as Tote users were favoriting items on their app. Development for Pinterest began in December 2009, launching itself as a closed beta in 2010. Between 2010 and 2011, Pinterest grew rapidly, amassing a large amount of users, also amassing 11 million visits per week.

In 2021, PayPal announced it would acquire Pinterest for around $70 a share, but PayPal's board and management later backed away from that deal. Also in 2021, Pinterest acquired Vochi, an app dedicated to editing and creating videos.
