Jonathan McIntosh (born: January 5, 1974 (1974-01-05)), better known online as Pop Culture Detective, is an American YouTuber dedicated to analyzing intersections of politics, masculinity, and entertainment. He is a former Feminist Frequency co-writer and producer.

Content

The channel originally uploaded short videos of clips from movies and movie soundtrack remixes. In December 5 2015 he uploaded his first political-related video Outtakes: 5 Ways Men Can Help End Sexism. His next videos were about toxic masculinity and how Steven Universe subverted expressions of emotion. He is critical of America as a country and Donald Trump, expressing disgust at his misogyny.

Since 2017, he started his trend of analyzing movies and tv shows through a feminist lens, such as the predatory romance of Harrison Ford movies, stalking being portrayed as romantic and older movies sexualization of women. He has praised movies such as Fantastic Beasts for their positive portrayal of masculinity. He is very vocal about the sexual assault of men being played for laughs in media. Even though he had been making analysis videos for a long time, he wasn't noticed by most until his videos on the misogyny of The Big Bang Theory, critiquing the show for using femininity as an insult and using the fact that the main characters were geeks as shields from their misogyny.

He is a huge Star Wars fan, making videos analyzing the stormtroopers paradox and the jedi, and praised The Last Jedi for subverting expectations and holding its male heroes accountable for their actions. Occasionally he will analyse children's media like Wall-E.

McIntosh's other work includes writing the opinion piece, Playing with privilege: the invisible benefits of gaming while male, which addressed the Gamergate controversy that had been receiving increasing media attention and public discourse. In the piece, he sought to address the underlying problems that contributed toward sexism in video gaming by examining the inherent privileges that male-identified gamers benefit from. Taking inspiration from the famous Daily Effects of White Privilege list by Peggy McIntosh, among others, McIntosh listed 25 Daily Effects of Male Game Privilege. These included such privileges as "I will never be asked or expected to speak for all other gamers who share my gender."

Personal life

He was born in Penascola, Florida, to John and Theresa McIntosh. Ever since the age of 13 he desired to be in musicals and theaters. He also had several radio jobs in the past. He currently resides in Merced, California.
