Prince Rogers Nelson † (June 7, 1958 - April 21, 2016 [aged 57])[2] was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and dancer.[2] He is estimated to have written hundreds of songs.[3]
Prince’s hit songs "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", "Kiss", "Raspberry Beret", and "Little Red Corvette" are just a small sample of his revolutionary blend of rock, funk, R&B and new wave pop that shattered barriers and empowered millions. In the 1980s, Prince made history by being one of the first black artists to have their videos in heavy rotation on MTV.[4]
Prince's official YouTube channel was created in 2014. It was created to celebrate the life, creative works and enduring legacy of him and his music. Following Prince's death, the channel became managed by his estate.[1] The channel includes music videos, performance clips, official Prince playlists, announcements, and more.[5][6][7][8]
Controversy[]
Grooming and Pedophilia allegations[]
In 1990, 16-year-old Mayte Garcia met Prince backstage in Barcelona after he saw a tape of her dancing. After she graduated high school in Germany at the age of 17, Prince became her legal guardian. Upon moving to Minneapolis, Prince and members of his team helped set her up with her own apartment. When she was 19, Prince told her to get on birth control, which is when their sexual relationship started.[9] After a four-year courtship, they married on February 14, 1996.
Their only child, Amiir, was born with Pfeiffer syndrome type 2 on October 16, 1996. He was unable to breathe without a ventilator and died six days after his birth. After the loss of her son, Garcia became depressed and wanted to commit suicide, but the affection of her dog, Mia, stopped her.[10] Then she had another miscarriage, Prince and Garcia's marriage deteriorated and they divorced in 2000.[11]
Jehovah's Witness[]
Prince became a Jehovah's Witness in the late 1990s. His conversion was reportedly a deeply personal experience, and he embraced the teachings of the religion.[12][13] Prince's religious views particularly regarding his views on sexuality and the music industry resulted in backlash as those views specifically became more conservative and hateful. His stance on certain issues, such as the morality of explicit content in music, was also later shaped by his faith.[14][15]

Trivia[]
- Prior to his death in April 21, 2016, audios of (or featuring) his songs were almost impossible to be found online. Prince had done this since he barely earned enough money from online music sales.[17]
- The popular manga and anime series, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, has many references dedicated to him.[18]
