History[]

Pre-RTVE[]

The history of Radio Nacional de España (RNE) can be traced back to its first broadcasts in Salamanca, developed as a propaganda tool for the Rebel faction during the Spanish Civil War, and founded on January 19, 1937 under Vicente Gay Forner's State Delegation for Press and Propaganda.[2]

The first Televisión Española (TVE) signal was broadcast on October 28, 1956 in Madrid, reaching around 600 television receivers.[3]

RTVE[]

In October 11, 1973, RNE and TVE were consolidated into RTVE Centralised Public Service. TVE held the monopoly on television broadcasting in the country until the 1980s, when regional broadcasters ETB and TV3 created regional broadcasters.[4]

The RTVE Public Body and TVE, S.A. and RNE, S.A. were dissolved on June 5, 2006 due to a significant deficit,[5] and Corporación RTVE was established on January 1, 2007, in accordance with the Law of State Radio and Television.[6]
