Rimi Baltic is a major retail operator in the Baltic states, that is based in Riga, Latvia and is a subsidiary of a Swedish group named ICA. It is located in Estonia[2], Latvia[1] and Lithuania.[3]
History[]
Origins[]
Rimi was first founded in 1977 as a discount grocery store chain named RIMI 500, by a businessman named Stein Erik Hagen. Hagen sold an interest in the chain to ICA AB in 1992 and in 1998, Hagen and ICA reached an agreement to sell a half interest in the business to Koninklijke Ahold N.V. Eventually he sold his remaining interest in Rimi, in 2004.[4] Through 2014, Rimi was owned and operated by ICA Norge until 2015, when they decided to sell all its shares in ICA Norge to Coop Norge, after years of heavy losses and multiple rebrand attempts.[5] After this, Coop Norge decided to convert every Rimi store to their own retail concepts. In 2016, Rimi sent out a final message on their website, and then was closed a few months later.[6][7]
In the Baltics[]
Rimi first started in the Baltics through a shopping centre in Latvia named "Dole", in February 20, 1996. Rimi Baltic was created in 2004 when Kesko and ICA had agreed to merge their operations in the Baltic states in a 50/50 joint venture. The retail operator officially begun operations on January 1, 2005.
