Eat fresh

―Subway slogan

SUBWAY Restaurants, or just Subway (also known as Doctor's Associates Inc), is an American fast food restaurant. They are known for selling "submarine sandwiches", which are more commonly known as 'subs'.

History[]

Subway was founded on August 28, 1965 as "Pete's Super Submarines" by Fred DeLuca. Fred borrowed $1,000 (equivalent to $8,545 in 2021) from his friend, Peter Buck to start the shop. The restaurant then expanded into the name Doctor's Associates, Inc. to oversee different operations of the restaurant. The name "Doctor's Associates, Inc" had nothing to do with any sort of medical organizations. It came from Fred DeLuca's goal of earning enough money from the sandwich business to afford to go to medical school.

The company was named 'Subway' in 1968. It began to expand through the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984, the first Subway outside of North America was opened in Bahrain. In the early 2000s, Subway introduced their famous "Eat fresh" campaign and began opening locations inside of supermarkets, such as Walmart. This caused them to rocket past other fast food chains in number of locations and Subway surpassed McDonald's in 2007. Subway became the largest fast food company in the world, with over 33,000 locations worldwide at its peak.

However, Subway would see decline in the 2010s and closed hundreds of its locations all over the world. Subway would still be able to retain its title though, with McDonald's being a close second. Subway had seen net loss for three consecutive years since 2014 and began to redesign its restaurants and launch a new campaign in 2017. Subway remains the largest fast food chain though it has not seen near the amount of success it saw in the early 2000s.

Channel[]

As the online craze got bigger and bigger, Subway created a YouTube channel on January 8, 2006. However, they didn't upload their first video until 6 years later, on January 9, 2012. The channel then went inactive for another 3 years. When Fred DeLuca died of leukemia on September 14, 2015, Subway followed it up with a tribute video one day later.

The Subway channel didn't really become active until 2018, when they began rapidly uploading shorts and cooking prep tutorials. This only lasted for a few days and the channel stopped uploading again until September 2018, when they celebrated 53 years of the restaurant's existence.

As of recent, the Subway channel just uploads interviews, commercials, and videos for franchise owners of the brand. On May 6, 2021, Subway uploaded a commercial featuring Tony Hawk, which quickly garnered over 21 million views.

  • The Subway channel continuously uploads and deletes their videos, so some of the information on video upload dates may not be correct.
