Early Life[]

Selena was born on April 16, 1971, as the youngest of three children to Marcelia Ofelia Quintanilla, who was of Cherokee ancestry, and to Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., who is a Mexican-American former musician.

In 1981, when Selena was 10, her father became manager of the newly-formed band Selena Y Los Dinos, and began to promote her music. In 1993, one of her most famous singles titled Como La Flor (spanish for "Like The Flower") peaked at number six on the US Billboard Top Latin Songs chart, and in 1994, another single Entre A Mi Mundo (spanish for "I Entered My World") ranked as the second-best selling regional Mexican album.

Death[]

On March 31, 1995, Selena was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, who was appointed by the Quintanilla family as the manager of Selena's boutiques in early 1994, while at her Days Inn motel room in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her death was mourned by many of her fans, and by the Hispanic community alike. She was 23 at the time of her death.
