James David "JD" Vance[1] (born: James Donald Bowman and né James David Hamel;[1] August 2, 1984 (1984-08-02) [age 40])[4] is an American[5] politician and US Marine veteran who is the 50th and current vice president of the United States,[6] having assumed office on January 20, 2025 under Donald Trump.[6] Vance was the United States Senator from Ohio from January 3, 2023 until he resigned in 2025 to become the vice president.[7]

Early life[]

He was born on August 2, 1984,[4] in Middleton, Ohio, United States,[8] to Donald Bowman and Beverly Vance.[9] He has an older sister named Lindsay Lewis Ratliff.[3]

When he was a toddler, his parents divorced.[9]

Two years later, his mother remarried to a man named Bob Hamel. As a result, his mother changed his name to James David Hamel, with the middle name coming from his uncle.[9][10]

Later life[]

In 2014, he changed his surname to Vance, which was to honor his maternal grandparents.[9][8]

When he changed his surname, he got married to Usha Vance (neé Chilukuri).[8]

On January 3, 2023, he became United States Senator from Ohio.[7]

In November 2024, Vance was elected vice president as Trump's running mate.[11] He and Trump were inaugurated on January 20, 2025.[12]
