Controversy[]

Tax Fraud[]

Shakira was implicated in the Paradise Papers in 2017, revealing her ownership of a Malta-based company used to transfer $30 million in music rights.[1]

In 2018, Spanish authorities began investigating her finances,[2] arguing she did not pay taxes in Spain between 2012 and 2014, while Shakira maintained her primary residence in the Bahamas. In July 2021, a Spanish judge ruled that there was "evidence of criminality" sufficient for Shakira to be brought to trial on charges of tax fraud.[3]

In 2021, the Pandora Papers showed Shakira submitted applications for three offshore companies in 2019, but her representatives claimed the companies had no income or activities and that Spanish authorities had been made aware of their existence.[4]

In July 2022, after not reaching a deal with the Spanish Prosecution Ministry, Shakira decided to go to trial to prove her innocence.[5] The prosecutor asked for an eight-year prison sentence over six alleged tax fraud crimes.[6] A Spanish judge approved the tax fraud trial in September 2022, and Shakira claims she has already paid all she owed plus 3 million euros ($2.8 million) as interest.[7] A trial date was set for November 2023[8] after receiving the necessary qualifying papers from both parties.[9]
