shaun (born: 16 June)[1] is a British political YouTuber and ostensibly one of the founding channels of the BreadTube movement.

Content[]

History[]

The channel, originally named shaun and jen, originally featured gameplay content from Shaun and his friend, Jen. Shaun describes this content as "mediocre", with its primary goal being "something to do" for the duo on a platform that, at the time, was believed to be aligned with "what YouTube was for" (including Minecraft videos, cats jumping into boxes and rally driving compilations).[2] This format branched out into short reviews of certain games, and a semi-regular series of video responses to CinemaSins that sought to correct their mistakes. Some content in this format still exists on the channel, namely some Mario Party Superstars content and the CinemaSins responses, as well as a couple of reviews.

Some time in 2016, Jen's role in the channel began to reduce owing to increasing responsibilities outside of the channel, though she still had a major part in the pair's weekly Twitch streams and in certain administrative tasks such as thumbnail generation.[3] The duo officially parted ways in September 2019[4] and rebranded the YouTube and Twitch channels to solo ventures by Shaun and Jen respectively.

Shift to political content[]

In late 2016, the channel's content began to shift toward political commentary aligned with Shaun's own anti-capitalist and pro-social justice values,[5] often in the format of video responses to popular right-wing political commentary channels such as Stefan Molyneux, Paul Joseph Watson, Thunderf00t, Sargon of Akkad and Black Pigeon Speaks.[6][7] Following the popularity of this format and the growth of the BreadTube movement, the channel expanded its reach of sources to critique to include right wing news publications like Brietbart and PragerU, the German migrant crime 'tracker' project XY Einzelfall[8] and, more recently, BBC News.[9][10]

On occasion the channel seeks to preserve its roots, with analysis of Ghostbusters (2016),[11] Black Panther,[12] and Harry Potter[13] being popular examples of media review post political shift, as well as the format of Q&A videos that are generally uploaded upon reaching subscriber milestones featuring gameplay footage.[14][15]

Controversy[]

Amazing Atheist[]

In 2016, a video response to Amazing Atheist's video titled Transgender Bigot's Hate Speech![16] gained criticism from the BreadTube community for its numerous references to the idea that the AmazingAtheist's host must have "some kind of mental illness" in order to hold the beliefs required to create the video. Agreeing with the criticism, Shaun took the video down shortly thereafter[17], releasing another video in November 2017 addressing both the AmazingAtheist video and Shaun original response video.[18]

Vaush[]

After tweeting that Donald J Trump was "an average president" amongst several other Twitter posts, Vaush would critisize him, leading to a feud.[19][20][21]
