Dave Kelly (born: September 5, 1980 (1980-09-05) [age 44]), better known online as Shmorky, is an American former animator, artist, and YouTuber who was known for creating satirical and comedic animations and comics, mainly on the forum website, Something Awful.

History[]

Shmorky's earliest online activity began around 2002 on Newgrounds when they posted the animation "CHU CHU", which was a parody of the video game, Chu-Chu Rocket.[1] They would soon begin posting their animations onto the website, Something Awful around 2004, which became heavily popular. Around that time, Something Awful founder, Lowtax began hosting a convention for members of the site called GoonCon2K4, where Shmorky and Lowtax met. Lowtax had offered a job to Shmorky where they could create animations for the website and could make money from it. Shmorky was also responsible for the creation of the Zalgo creepypasta meme during his time at Something Awful via one of their comics.[2]

Around 2008, Shmorky created a fictional species called the Klurfs, which they would frequently use in his animations and art.[3] They would frequently be featured on Lowtax's YouTube channel, Gaming Garbage where they played terrible video games, starting on May 14, 2013. However, Shmorky would eventually leave around 2016 due to tension between the two.[4]

Around the same time as starting up their YouTube channel in 2012, Shmorky was commissioned by several animation companies and popular YouTubers for their content, such as Adult Swim and GameGrumps. The most notable example during this period was an animated version of the "This is Fine" meme as a bumper for Adult Swim.[5]

On January 6, 2017, Shmorky was checked into the Henrico Doctors Hospital and made a post on Patreon saying they would be leaving forever. Since then, much of their social media has become inactive and they haven't returned since. Many began to make theories on where they are now, but the most common one what that shortly after leaving social media, they will transform into controversial right-wing webcomic artist StoneToss. People point this out by their similar artstyle and coincidentally showing up a few months after Shmorky left, but that was completely disproven when StoneToss got doxxed in March of 2024 by an antifascist Twitter group.

Six years later on June 8, 2023, shortly after MagicMush made a video about Shmorky, Amanda made a sudden appearance in the comment section with her YouTube account "kommissarmandar7660". While she doesn't know where they are now like other people (as she hasn't seen them for years), her theory is that they are currently living in Mineral, Virginia with their friends outside of the internet and she hasn't think of them rarely.[6]

Content[]

Lauren's Cartoon[]

Lauren's Cartoon is a comedic series that involves the daughter of Lowtax, Lauren Kyanka telling several nonsensical stories that sometimes involve made-up or already pre-existing characters, such as Dora the Explorer. The first video was uploaded onto Something Awful on January 10, 2010, and there would be a total of 16 videos created.

Gaming Guyz[]

Gaming Guyz is a series that involves two characters named Paulo and Andy who talk about video games in a comedic manner. Shmorky collaborated with two artists, Kevin Bowen and Axemaniac to help create the series. Sometimes they discuss other topics, such as the 2008 presidential election, Comic Con, the 2010 Winter Olympics, etc. The first episode was uploaded on March 17, 2008 and there would be a total of 34 episodes. A short flash game was released on October 10, 2010.

Personal life[]

Shmorky had graduated from high school in the year 2000 and had looked for job opportunities online. However, they couldn't find a job due to the Dot-Com Crash, so they ended up living in their relative's house while drawing comics as a hobby. Their uncle had verbally abused them, so they moved into a house with a new roommate after they talked on IRC. However, this new roommate forced them to draw inappropriate comics. When Shmorky then refused, the roommate manipulated and raped them.

They would eventually move out back to their relative's house where they became more depressed, though they would move to another state with a roommate described as a slob.[7] Shmorky identifies themselves as genderqueer and uses multiple pronouns, though prefers to be referred to using they/them pronouns.[8]

Controversies[]

Gender Issues[]

Beginning around 2016, Shmorky became obsessed with gender issues on social media websites like Tumblr. Shmorky would soon change their appearance to become more androgynous, where they would wear a wig and apply makeup to their face. Shmorky's girlfriend, Amanda would say that they had gotten a job opportunity at Nickelodeon and were given the chance to create their own animated series. However, they soon turned down the offer after Shmorky wanted to insert gender issues into the show and was constantly obsessed with said issues.[9]

Amanda[]

Around 2016, Shmorky got into a relationship with someone on Tumblr named Amanda Mullen and began connecting on gender identity. Amanda is diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. Due to this, she has to take medication to keep her mental illness in check. However, when Shmorky and Amanda would get into an argument, they would sometimes hide her pills, which would sometimes leave Amanda in a psychotic meltdown. Shmorky had secretly recorded one instance of her meltdowns, where Amanda is freaking out thinking that Shmorky is threatening her and questioning their relationship. She also makes claims that Jews are taking over the world, thinking that she can't stand up to anybody. Shmorky says that they want Amanda to get help and tells her that she shouldn't have threatened someone's life, as there have been some instances where they had to leave the house because they felt threatened. They also mention that Amanda attempted to hurt them because Shmorky mentioned that those people wanted her kicked out of the house.[10]

Lowtax would clarify in the comments section of the reuploaded audio saying that the confrontation started because Amanda was harassing his family as she thought he was a child molester and distributed child pornography. Shmorky would contact Lowtax's wife saying they were afraid of her, so he would call the police, though Shmorky was too scared to talk.[11]

On October 15, 2016, Amanda made several posts on Kiwi Farms detailing her relationship with Shmorky. She would make claims that Shmorky had emotionally abused her, saying that they wouldn't allow her to leave the house and would often call the cops on her, saying that she was violent. However, Amanda says that she is never a violent person.[12]

Fetish art and roleplay[]

A website was discovered called "Smut Comics" which showed inappropriate drawings of characters and furries having sex with explicit genitalia. Some of their artwork depicts Shmorky themselves as a bunny wearing diapers and defecating and urinating. Some had noticed the similarities between Shmorky's art style and the art on the website. However, Shmorky has said that they only drew them to make money from commissions. However, Amanda would eventually confirm the rumors on October 27, saying that Shmorky wanted her to change their diapers after pissing themselves, though she refused.[13]

On December 30, 2016, a user on Kiwi Farms named Carefully would make several posts showing screenshots of her and Shmorky roleplaying involving incest, pedophilia, and scat. She claimed that she was 16-18 when they began interacting with Shmorky, where they roleplayed as a 7-year-old Klurf. Eventually, they began roleplaying as themselves where they would defecate in their pants and have Carefully eat their feces.[14] On January 6, 2017, another user named Soliloqueef posted an image where it showed Shmorky emailing them around 2007 to voice act as a 12-year-old fetish artist named PeachesThePuppy on Furaffinity.[15] The page consisted of several images of animals and other images combined in Photoshop. However, some people also connected this to another account Shmorky made up named Sandypants. This persona was created in 2009, where they posed as a 13-year-old where they drew and talked about feces and urine.[16]
