Sidemen (or simply SDMN, formerly The Ultimate Sidemen) is a group of seven YouTubers who posts various vlogs and challenges. The group was created on October 19, 2013. The name is an allusion to a term to refer to those who are "behind the scenes" and are much less noticed than the main people. Originally, Simon was a "side-man" to JJ, and Tobi was a "side-man" to Josh.[1] When the Sidemen channel was announced on May 16, 2016, the channel gained over 1 million subscribers within 3 days, making it the fastest channel to achieve this feat at the time.[2]
The Sidemen are a group of friends who began playing video games online together in the early 2010s.[1] As the decade progressed, they branched out into more varied content and created a commercial brand from their name. Since January 2018, they have uploaded weekly videos to their group channel under the banner of "Sidemen Sunday".[3]
They created a second channel called MoreSidemen in 2018, which was originally used for compilations, but evolved into a channel where multiple videos are posted a week.[4] In 2020, they made a third channel called SidemenReacts, where they exclusively post "reaction videos".[5] In 2021, they created a fourth channel called SidemenShorts which utilises the YouTube Shorts section of the website.[6]
History[]
In 2005 (aged 12–13), Miniminter became friends with KSI and would help him record videos for fun. The two eventually ended up connecting with Zerkaa in 2012, who was already long-term friends with TBJZL from secondary school.[1] On Josh's 21st birthday in September 2013, the four were all in a voice hangout and Josh started watching a stream from Behzinga, whom he connected with and thus invited to the group. Ethan, Josh and Tobi would then play FIFA Pro Clubs everyday together, further cementing Ethan as part of the group.[1] This initial group was nicknamed - by Simon - "The Original Five".[1] Ethan coined the former official name of the group, 'The Ultimate Sidemen' which is an allusion to a term to refer to those who are "behind the scenes" in a group and are much less popular than the main members.[1] Originally, Simon was a "sideman" to JJ while Tobi was a "sideman" to Josh.[1]
They started recording and playing Grand Theft Auto V together over the following months. One day, YouTube had gone down (server issues) and Josh began talking to Vikkstar about it whilst in a Skype call with the rest, prompting him to add Vikkstar to the group call.[1] He fit the group despite not being as invested in FIFA/football, however this was unimportant as it was just a friend group at the time. The Ultimate Sidemen - minus Wroetoshaw (W2S) - officially formed on 19 October 2013, after Ethan created the group on GTA following the release of Crews.[1] In early 2014, after taking Harry 'under their wing' to protect him from a rogue 'friend' he had met as a result of his quick rise to fame (as well as his reckless purchases, i.e. a $5k red Gucci belt that night) they asked Harry to record with them and he too fit in and eventually became integrated.[1] The Sidemen released a video on their second channel in 2019 explaining in detail how each member was added to the group and how the group was officially formed.[1] British rapper JME allegedly played a key part in the group's formation behind the scenes, and is often referred to as the unofficial '8th Sidemen' by the Sidemen.[7]
In August 2017, KSI "left" the group (he claimed it was "because of Ethan", triggering events known as the "Sidemen War/Beef") which in turn prompted a series of diss tracks and online spats, the most popular of which being Harry's diss track on JJ and Ricegum, KSI Sucks.[8][9] The majority of the "beef" was fabricated and was deemed by some as a ploy to gain more views/attention. In reality, JJ never actually left the group and the seven remained friends.[10]
In 2018, the Sidemen launched a web television series for YouTube Originals called The Sidemen Show, after the creation of Sidemen Sundays directed huge amounts of views to the previously-stale channel, prompting YouTube to reconsider the Sidemen's proposal for a show, having originally declined it due to low views. It premiered in June 2018 to positive reviews and reactions. However, the group denied any intent to make further episodes due to the high costs involved.[11]
The Sidemen have a diverse fan base. As shown in vlogs made by individual Sidemen members, the majority of the fans that show up to events are young teenage males.[12] A majority of their fanbase has grown up with the group and spent a large proportion of their teenage years watching the Sidemen's videos.
In the 2020s, the Sidemen cemented themselves as a commercial brand. The seven members are all directors for the main Sidemen companies (Sidemen Clothing Ltd., Sidemen Holdings Ltd., Sidemen Entertainment Ltd. and Sidemen Ventures Ltd.) with all these companies officially operating from their headquarters in Worthing, West Sussex.[13]
As of 2024, the Sidemen have used their brand to create multiple businesses and and expand the ones they already own, such as; Side+, Sides, XIX Vodka, Sidemen Clothing, SideCards and Best.[14]
About[]
Games[]
All of the Sidemen are fans of association football and FIFA is the main game that is commonly associated with most them. Each member of the group has at least two YouTube channels; one for FIFA and "real life" videos and one for other games such as Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty. Vikkstar123 is an exception; his main channel is not FIFA-focused and his second channel is Minecraft-focused (although he also runs a third Let's Play channel and the fourth Call of Duty community channel).
This is a list of video games played by the Sidemen since the group's inception in 2013.
- This list is potentially endless. You can help out by adding any video games we may have missed. Please make sure they are genuine and you have sourced them reliably.
- A game that gains a position on this list must have had AT LEAST two Sidemen playing together (i.e. a video game that Miniminter has played on his own would not count towards this list).

Controversies[]
Behzinga vs KSI[]
On August 3, 2017, KSI made a series of tweets announcing his disengagement with the Sidemen. Following this, he uploaded a short YouTube video on August 6, 2017, confirming his decision to leave the group. He claimed that the reason he was leaving was primarily due to Ethan, stating he "can't stand him". JJ ended the video with a segment of him "rapping" which included disses against the Sidemen, in particular Ethan.[8]
The same day (August 6), Ethan uploaded a video titled "REPLACING KSI IN THE SIDEMEN HOUSE". In the video, Ethan joked that he was taking JJ's place in the Sidemen House, and proceeded to mess with JJ's room. The following day, Ethan uploaded a full-length "diss track" targeting JJ regarding their current drama, simply titled "Drama".[26][27]
On August 9, KSI uploaded a video of his reaction to the aforementioned diss track created by Ethan. He confirmed he was working on his own diss track.[28] The track titled "Earthquake" was uploaded on August 12 to KSI's main channel and featured American YouTuber RiceGum.[29] Ethan posted his own reaction video to the song less than 24 hours later.[30]
Aside from a few quips, not a lot happened between Ethan and KSI for the following week - though Ethan confirmed he was working on a response to JJ's track "Earthquake". On August 18, he uploaded "Finished" and announced it'd be the last diss track he'd create.[31] KSI uploaded a reaction video the following day (August 19) and said he was still deliberating whether or not to respond.[32]
Ethan later stated in a vlog that his relationship with JJ can still be rebuilt and the diss tracks were just banter. It is believed that, with KSI not making another diss track on Ethan, this part of the drama had concluded. KSI uploaded a video on August 28 called "CONFRONTING BEHZINGA" showing that the two of them were very clearly still friends and that the drama was mainly just a joke.[33]
Deji vs Miniminter[]
On August 5, Deji "jokingly" announced that he wanted to join the Sidemen. Simon called him out on Twitter, saying they didn't want him and that Deji should join Team 10 instead. Deji and Simon continued to dispute on Twitter, arguing primarily about JJ. Deji responded with tweets about how awful the Sidemen are and how "they're on life support".
Deji uploaded a diss track targeting the entirety of the Sidemen group (despite only having beef with Simon via Twitter) on August 11. He "dissed" all five remaining members of the group.[34] Simon uploaded a video reacting to the track along with Vik, Josh, and Ethan the same day.[35]
On August 12, Simon uploaded his diss track in response to Deji's titled "KSI'S LITTLE BROTHER - DEJI DISS TRACK".[36] Deji subsequently uploaded his reaction to the track on August 13.[37]
On August 20, Deji uploaded a second diss track directed at Miniminter, titled "Ungrateful".[38]
This track once again brought about accusations of drug use which Simon denied in his reaction. Despite criticizing the track due to its "weak bars" and false information, Simon said he would not respond to any more diss tracks.[39] In a video on September 3, in which Deji and KSI reacted to diss tracks, Deji explained that "Ungrateful" was actually targeted at both Simon and Harry and that the drug accusations were directed towards him, not Simon.[40]
KSI vs W2S[]
Taking place concurrently with the drama between Deji and Simon, Harry uploaded a three-minute-long diss track on August 8 titled "KSI Sucks". The video has over 64 million views and was considered by the audience to be one of the best tracks. Harry predominantly targeted JJ and his family in the song.[9]
On August 9, RiceGum uploaded his reaction to Harry's diss track and was confused that Harry only mentioned him once throughout the song (as well as it being a compliment) despite his name being featured in the title. RiceGum also reacted to other diss tracks against him and complained about their hostility.[41]
On August 10, KSI uploaded his reaction to Harry's diss track.[42] A few hours later, Harry uploaded a video recapping the events that had taken place so far (and discussing RiceGum's video), titled "W2S - KSI ROASTS MY SISTER". This featured Harry's "second verse", although wasn't a full-length diss track. It didn't receive as much hate as his original song and Harry explained his reasons for being so brutal.[43]
On August 13 - after uploading "Earthquake" aimed at Ethan, KSI uploaded a diss track titled "Little Boy" aimed at Harry as a response to "KSI Sucks". The video has over 61 million views. It included a lot of "controversial" lines relating to drug use which many of the Sidemen claimed was when the drama started turning serious.[44]
The following day, Harry uploaded a video with his mum reacting to "Little Boy". In the video, Harry promised he'd post his response within "72 hours".[45]. The day after that (15 August), KSI reacted to Harry's reaction video - within his own video titled "I'm Getting Deported".[46]
On August 19, Harry's second diss track called "KSI Exposed" was uploaded.[47] The video is now unlisted. KSI did not react to this track as he did with the others and later revealed that he got so mad at Harry that he could not upload his reaction.
On August 24, KSI uploaded a diss track titled "Two Birds One Stone". It was targeted towards both W2S and Joe Weller and was the final diss track in the W2S and KSI drama. He responded to the accusations from Harry's diss track and summed up the situation between himself and Joe Weller.[48] Harry reacted to this track on the same day and provided no evidence that he would respond again.[49]
Involvement of TBJZL[]
TBJZL vowed from the beginning that he wouldn't get involved in the drama. He instead launched "Team SKRRR" (implying that they avoid any involvement in any drama).[50] Deji nonetheless insulted Tobi during his own diss track, yet Tobi still did not engage.
Vikkstar123 vs Deji[]
On August 15, Vikkstar123 dropped his own diss track against Deji - something Deji said would never happen - called "THE END".[51] The song was so fire, many people have said there was no coming back from it and that the war is over. Even KSI reacted to it and admitted that Deji couldn't come back from it. Nevertheless, Deji "reacted" to Vik's track, took it personally, got triggered, and said he'd make a new track aimed solely at Vik. Vik said that he will not be making another one, as the first was just a joke.[52]
The End[]
On November 11, DramaAlert uploaded a brand new video in which he said that if they both like his tweet, that they made up. Both of them liked his tweet, confirming that they don't have beef anymore.[53]
Sidemen Countdown 2 video[]
On April 2, 2023, the Sidemen garnered controversy when KSI spoke a racial slur towards Pakistani descents in a Sidemen Sunday video parodying the British game show Countdown a second time on their channel.[54][55] Although the word was bleeped in the YouTube version of the video, the letters used to spell the word appeared on the board and on-screen graphics, and the entire panel in the video burst into laughter upon KSI saying the word.[56]
The Sidemen were criticised on Twitter after a clip of KSI speaking the slur,[57] including criticisms from DJ and presenter Bobby Friction and comedian Guz Khan among others.[57][58][59] Hours later, KSI tweeted an apology for the slur and announced that he would be taking a break from social media.[60][57] The Sidemen also released a statement on Twitter the following day apologizing for the slur, with the statement reading, "We against racism and discrimination of any kind and we failed to do that."[61] The full video in question has since been deleted.[57] The Sidemen had also not uploaded a Sidemen Sunday video the following week.
In an interview held before the 2023 Sidemen Charity Match, Vikkstar123 told the BBC regarding the slur that the group had "very serious meetings" about the acceptability of what they joke about, saying, "We had to acknowledge that things are different to when we first all started platforms and the world has changed as a place. We saw it as a lesson and moved on from there and I think people were very understanding of that and allowed us to carry on doing what we're doing with a better sense of responsibility."[62]
Total Subscribers[]
As of July 2023, the Sidemen have a combined total of over 150 million subscribers across their channels.

Trivia[]
- Simon runs and maintains the "MoreSidemen" channel.[83]
- XIX, which represents the number 19 in roman numerals, stands for the day the Sidemen were formed (19th of October, 2013).[84]
- The Sidemen club on FIFA is also named XIX.[85]
- The group, mainly those that lived in the Sidemen House, would record gameplay throughout the night and spent up to 14 hours a day sitting at their desks. This resulted in abnormal sleep patterns/schedules. Vik revealed that, in order to sustain his near-constant upload schedule on YouTube, he went to sleep at around 11:00 am and woke up at 6:00 pm. This was seen a lot, especially when streaming with friends overseas.[86]
- During the time that Simon and JJ shared a flat (2019 until 2022), the Sidemen would use it as a base to film their less-extravagant group videos such as Q&As and indoor low-budget challenges, making up most contemporary MoreSidemen videos.[87]
- The Sidemen have a system in which they count how many videos each member has made (presented or organized) a year. A yellow card is given if a member is late/does not show up to a video shoot. Two yellow cards introduce a red card. If a member receives a red card, one of their videos is discounted. The member with the most yellow/red cards or the least amount of videos made that year, is given the next available video to organize.[88]
- In July 2023, the group invested in The Fellas Studios, a production company founded by YouTubers Calfreezy and TheBurntChip.[89]
- In August 2023, the Sidemen won a Guinness World Record for the most concurrent viewers for a charity sports match live stream on YouTube.[90]
- On September 26, 2023, the Sidemen signed with United Talent Agency, an American talent agency, for their representation in all areas of North America.[91]
- On February 14, 2024, Netflix released a documentary about the Sidemen titled "The Sidemen Story".[92]
