Early Life[]

Stephen Lawson was born in Norwich, England.[5] He attended a local comprehensive school where he developed an early passion for comedy and filmmaking.[6] Lawson studied at Salford University in Manchester, where he pursued a degree in media and performance, further honing his comedic and acting talents.[7] During his time at university, he started his YouTube channel under the pseudonym "Stephen Tries," initially uploading short comedy sketches with friends.[3]

YouTube career[]

Stephen Tries launched his self-titled YouTube channel on April 20, 2013.[8] The channel started with comedic sketches and parodies of celebrities, TV shows, and internet culture.[3] His breakthrough came in 2016 with a viral parody series titled "How To Be," where Stephen hilariously impersonated famous YouTubers, athletes, and musicians.[9] Some of his most popular videos in this series include "How To Be Stormzy," "How To Be a Footballer," and "How To Be a Roadman," which collectively amassed millions of views.[9][10][11]

His comedy is characterized by its sharp wit, absurdist humor, and playful critiques of contemporary trends.[3] Stephen's channel expanded to include a variety of content such as challenges, roasts, and collaborations with other UK YouTubers, including KSI, The Sidemen, and WillNE.[12][13][14]

Stephen has frequently appeared in videos with the Sidemen, a group of British YouTubers known for their challenges, vlogs, and gaming content.[15] His role in the group dynamic often involves him playing the "comedian" or "roast master" during Sidemen events and series, including the Sidemen Charity Football matches and Sidemen Sundays.[16] His quick humor and ability to roast other members have made him a fan favorite within the group.[15]

In 2019, Stephen expanded his content to the audio format with the launch of the Stephen Tries Podcast.[17] The show features Stephen and his friends discussing various topics, from internet culture and current events to behind-the-scenes stories from his YouTube career.[17] The podcast is known for its relaxed, banter-driven style and has grown in popularity, earning a spot in the UK iTunes podcast charts.[18]
