System of a Down (also known as SOAD or System) is an American heavy metal, nu metal, alternative metal, hard rock, alternative rock, progressive rock, and progressive metal band formed in Glendale, California, United States in 1994 by vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer Andy Kachaturian. In 1997, Kachaturian left the band and was replaced by John Dolmayan. Since then, the lineup has been unchanged.

Trivia[]
- All four members of System of a Down are of Armenian descent. They have refused to play in Turkey due to their denial of the Armenian genocide. They also regularly comment on Armenia and push for recognition of issues regarding Armenia,[1] for example the song Genocidal Humanoidz was about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.[2]
- Serj is known for his large vocal range and his lyricism.
- The band has been nominated for four Grammies and won one.[3]
- In 2001, they went on a tour around the USA and Mexico with Slipknot.[4]
- Tankian and Dolmayan are each other's brother's in law.[5][6]
- Serj has a son, Khachadour, who is also a guitarist.[7]
