TMZ was started in 2005 as a collaboration between AOL and Telepictures (a division of Warner Media). The purpose of the collab was an effort to "further feed the current American obsession with celebrities."
TMZ quickly grew in popularity, with The New York Times calling TMZ "one of the most successful online ventures of the last few years." In 2008. the website had over 10 million viewers every month.
In 2009, Warner Media divested AOL and Telepictures became the sole owner of TMZ. In 2021, TMZ was sold to Fox Corporation.
