Toto is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1977 by David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, David Hungate, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball and Steve Porcaro, the band is best known for their hit singles, Africa, which became a popular internet meme, and Rosanna, as well as Hold The Line. At their peak, the band was one of the best-selling music groups.

The band was formed in 1977 by Grant High School schoolmates David Paich, Jeff and Steve Porcaro, and David Hungate in Los Angeles. Bobby Kimball was also added to the lineup. In 1977 they released their self-titled debut album, it featured songs like ''Hold the line'' and ''Georgy Porgy''.
In 1979 They released their next album ''Hydra'',[1] the album had the song ''99'' which was inspired by George Lucas's film THX 1138.
In 1981 they released their album ''Turn Back''[2] Which was a flop.
In 1982 they released their 4th album ''TOTO IV''[3] The album was a huge hit with songs such as, ''Rosanna'', ''I won't hold you back'', ''Afraid of Love'', ''Make Believe'' and ''Africa''. Africa has become an extremely popular internet meme. In 1983 Bobby Kimball was fired from TOTO due to drug related charges.
Kimball was replaced by Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams. TOTO would then record 2 albums ''Fahrenheit'' and ''The Seventh One ''. After the Seventh one Joseph Williams Left the band. In 1992 Drummer Jeff Porcaro died, he was replaced by drummer Simon Phillps.
In 1998 Kimball returned to the band and would leave in 2008 when the band broke up. They where reformed in 2010 and Joseph Williams was brought back. As of February 2022, the band has released fourteen studio albums, eight live albums, twenty-four compilation albums, one soundtrack album, two box sets, and fifty-four singles. As of July 2024 Africa has more than 1 billion views.
