The Runaway Guys, often abbreviated as TRG, are a collaborative group of Let's Players on YouTube, comprising Proton Jon (Claire), NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy. Chugga is in charge of maintaining the channel, although Claire has made posts and comments for the channel as well. They have had special guests for many of their projects, with guest collaborators MasaeAnela and Tom Fawkes being considered the 'co-producers' of the channel.

For the first two years, updates usually only occurred every Saturday, but this was changed to Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday following an announcement on February 8, 2013. Videos for Mario Party games (starting with the third) and Fortune Street are also posted daily (each board beginning on Saturday and continuing every day until its end). Since the creation of the channel in 2011, fifty main collab LPs have been produced, along with five side collab LPs and six tournament LPs. They have 487 thousand subscribers and 397 total video views as of 2023.

At PAX East 2012, the group established a video game trivia and challenge show that would go on to become Thrown Controllers, which has grown into a hugely popular show, appearing in the United States and Canada at several conventions. In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. All of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief. To date, The Runaway Guys Colosseum has raised over $1,000,000.

The Runaway Guys was launched by Proton Jon (Claire), NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy, and their first Let's Play, Mario Party, premiered on February 5, 2011. The three of them were the only ones participating, but many of their later videos have featured additional players. Chugga is in charge of maintaining the channel, although Claire has made posts and comments for the channel as well. They have had special guests for many of their projects.

Along with their official long-running LPs, they have done one-shot filler LPs (labeled "The Runaway Gaiden"), tournaments featuring multitudes of guest players, and side collab projects that they gradually update and use as filler between regular projects.

On occasion at various conventions, The Runaway Guys have their own panel, called Thrown Controllers, a live game show which focuses on video game trivia and challenges. The event has been broadcast on numerous gaming conventions such as PAX, Magfest and Momocon. In its debut at PAX East 2012, two teams took turns answering questions and playing video game challenges, either against each other, solo, or against members of the audience. At PAX Prime 2012, they retooled the game into a single-person quiz show with challenges, similar to the initial concept except for one person at a time, and this is how it has been done since. Many prizes are awarded at these panels, ranging from character pins from Fangamer to (as a grand prize) an actual video game console, such as a Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch.

In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. All of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief. Combining video games, music, art, and comedy, The Runaway Guys and friends go all out to raise money for charity. Be it comedic stream bumpers, video game modifier donation incentives, catching a rocking concert, or chilling out with some relaxing art time, there is something for everybody to watch and enjoy during the event. With the combined efforts of the community, event staff, and the performers, a total over $1,000,000 has been raised since the inception of the event.

Chuggaaconroy[]

The first of the main three Runaway Guys, Chuggaaconroy is usually the best or at least better players of whatever game the group is playing. He is the loudest and most energetic of the three main guys. He also tries to annoy Proton Jon (Claire) as much as possible and allow for situations where the viewers can laugh at the group's collective suffering.

In the Mario Parties (up to Mario Party 4), he played Donkey Kong. In Mario Party 5, he switched to Daisy. In Mario Party 7, he switched again to Toad. In Super Smash Bros, he played Ness. In Mario Kart 64, he played Wario. In the New Super Mario Bros. series, he played Mario, but switched to Yellow Toad in New Super Luigi U. In Kirby's Return to Dreamland, he played Kirby. In Fortune Street, he played Bowser Jr. for the first three boards, then switched back to Donkey Kong starting from Slimenia. In the Tournament Arc of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he played Lucas. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Bowser Jr. In Mario Kart: Double Dash, he played Toad on Team Streetpassers with MasaeAnela. In the Rayman series, he played Rayman. In Castle Crashers, he played Red Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Red Link. In Secret of Mana he played the Boy. NintendoCapriSun[]

The second of the main three Runaway Guys, NintendoCapriSun (also just "NCS" or "Tim") is the quietest and nicest of the three. This usually means Chugga and Claire will beat him, though he's not by any means bad at games.

In the Mario Parties, Mario Kart 64 and Fortune Street, he played Yoshi. In the New Super Mario Bros.series, he played Luigi. In Kirby's Return to Dreamland, he played King Dedede. In Super Smash Bros, he initially played Yoshi in his match against Chugga, then switched to Fox for the remainder of the video. In the Tournament Arc of Super Smash Bros Brawl, he played Diddy Kong. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Yoshi. In the Rayman series, he played a Teensie. In Castle Crashers, he played Green Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Green Link. Proton Jon (Claire)[]

The third of the three main Runaway Guys, Proton Jon (Claire) is also a great player, but is usually messed up by the game or Chugga. Tends to act like she's surrounded by idiots.

In Mario Party 1, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 2, and Super Smash Bros. 64, she played Mario. In the New Super Mario Bros series, she played Blue Toad. In Kirby's Return to Dreamland, she primarily played as Meta Knight. In Fortune Street and all Mario Party titles starting from 3, she played Waluigi (or Rosalina in games where she is available). The Completionist[]

In November 2023, The Runaway Guys responded to the Jirard Khalil (The Completionist) charity scandal instigated by Karl Jobst and SomeOrdinaryGamers by cutting ties with Jirard and removing him from their collaborations and events, including the annual Colosseum charity stream. Jirard was dismissed from the lineup of The Runaway Guys Colosseum events and was not invited to subsequent collaborations due to the allegations of charity fraud involving his family's Open Hound Foundation charity.

The core members of TRG (Proton Jon (Claire), NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy) largely cut professional ties with Jirard. Proton Jon (Claire) explicitly revealed that Jirard would not be attending the 2024 Colosseum event and they had cut ties as a result of the controversy, Proton Jon (Claire) moved the sales of event T-shirts from Jirard's website to an independent platform to separate TRG's business and fundraising capabilities from the controversy.[1] In a later development in 2025, NintendoCapriSun commented on one of Jirard's response videos, hinting at a potential future return to collaborations, though this was after Jirard had made further apologies and the Colosseum event had ended for unrelated reasons.

In January 2024, multiple allegations of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment against Emile were raised by several women, most notably fellow content creators Lady Emily and MasaeAnela, and a third individual, Lawly.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] The allegations included claims of boundary-pushing, a pattern of inappropriate shoe/foot roleplay messages, and, in one instance involving Lawly in 2010, sexually charged conversations that occurred when she was a minor (15) and Emile was 19.[13]

Emily accused Emile of sexual harassment and having a foot fetish, claiming in 2023 he persistently attempted to engage in nonconsensual erotic foot fetish roleplay with her over direct messages, which she detailed using shared screenshots and videos.[14][15][16][17][18][19] Following those allegations, Emile was mocked and faced widespread internet scrutiny, with many users re-contextualizing his older videos and public comments about shoes and fitness, viewing them through the lens of the allegations. Amidst the backlash, Emile issued two statements where he apologized to Emily and the community for overstepping boundaries in their friendship.[20][21][22][23]

Masae's allegations of emotional abuse emerged one week later after she released a statement formally disassociating from Emile and disapproving of his actions, citing his history of emotional abuse behavior and negligence regarding her boundaries during their relationship.[24] Her statement led to immediate debate and strong reactions from fans, many of whom rallied behind her and and highlighted patterns of concerning behavior in their older collaborative videos, including instances where Emile would repeatedly make jokes or comments that appeared to make Masae visibly uncomfortable or prompted her to tell him to shut up. While originally viewed as playful banter, Masae’s statement clarified that Emile historically pushed boundaries despite her repeatedly asking him to stop.

Masae's allegations were soon followed by sexting allegations from a former fan of Emile who was a minor at the time of their initial interactions. Twitch Streamer Werster released screenshots of sexually explicit roleplay chats from 2010 between a close friend of his named Lawly, 15 at the time, and Emile, 19 at the time. He also shared a Google Document written by Lawly which included 48 pages of discussions and chat logs primarily from AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and Discord. The logs dated back to early-to-mid 2010 when Lawly was 15 and Emile was 19, continuing with more recent Discord screenshots from 2021 to 2022. The logs contained evidence of sexually-charged roleplay and conversations involving the removal of shoes and boots that Lawly described as inappropriate given her age at the time of the initial interactions. While Emile already faced backlash over the prior allegations, the Lawly sexting allegations garnered the most backlash due to Lawly being a minor at the time, which led to widespread condemnation across social media and being widely considered at the time as an abuse of Emile's fame and power dynamic.[25]

In February 2024, The Runaway Guys channel went on a hiatus and the other members, Claire and Tim distanced themselves from Emile publicly, while remaining personal friends. The Thrown Controllers and The Runaway Guys Colosseum events continued under a different branding, without Emile's involvement in an official capacity for a period. Emile himself asked YouTubers to dissociate themselves from him to protect their channels from backlash. In April 2024, Emile made a response titled "Hey, Everybody" on Twitter and also created a Google Document, in which he addressed the allegations, apologized for his actions and clarified his perspective. Emile stated that the public disclosure of the allegations and subsequent harassment caused him and others around him immense stress and health crises. Emile expressed regret about how he handled his breakup with Masae.[26] Emile detailed his private interactions with Lady Emily, claiming they had resolved their issues in 2023 and she had consented to their "silly" conversations about shoes and roleplay; he said that he didn't understand social cues and repeatedly messaged her due to his autism.[27][28][29] Emile responded to leaked DMs with Lawly by claiming he was an "idiot teenager" who made inappropriate jokes and then claimed Lawly was the one who allegedly manipulated him and that he was the one who was uncomfortable with it.[30][31][32][33][34][35] After he initially claimed that his interest in footwear was purely stylistic and not sexual with friends, Emile admitted to possessing a kink for feet and shoes.[36][37][38][39]

Masae then released her own statement confirming Emile's account and also asking for the community to stop bothering them.[40][41] Emile confirmed that he held no grudge towards Masae and understood that her previous actions were driven by a need for peace, not genuine malice. Lawly released a follow-up google doc from April 2024, she denied Emile's narrative, she stated that he was the one who allegedly started having sexual conversations with her.[42] She mainly focused on messages from June to July 2021, where Emile allegedly stated that he was attracted to Lawly, but she didn't have the same feelings toward him.[43] In response, Emile admitted his memory of the past was imperfect and apologized for his misunderstandings.[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52] Emily issued a final statement to Emile expressing hope for his recovery and improvement, and apologizing for any mental distress she caused.[53][54] In June 2024, Emile returned to creating content and uploaded backlogged bonus videos, then making a full return in August 2024 with a playthrough of the Future Connected Campaign of Xenoblade Chronicles.[55][56] The Runaway Guys channel returned to uploading videos in December 2024. Their first Let's Play upon returning was Banjo-Tooie, which began in June 2025. Although the channel had already returned to uploading content, they waited until Emile felt comfortable again before recording a new Let's Play.
