“ | Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the Right Opinion, the home of a twat with too much free time. | ” |
―TRO's intro |
James Dancey, better known online as The Right Opinion (or simply TRO), is an English YouTuber known for his long commentary videos on YouTubers and current affairs.
Early Life []
James was born in England. According to him, he was born around the same area as Colossal Is Crazy. Growing up, he took anger management therapy.
James decided to take a gap year before attending university. He went to three different universities - the first university was ‘not good’; he transferred from a second university in Amsterdam to the University of Groningen.
Career[]
James' channel was created in March of 2016. His YouTube name was decided on a whim. His videos originally started off as commentary and criticisms of left-wing politics, right-wing politics and current affairs over gameplay. A visit to Insomnia 2018, as well as a personal reflection of his own strengths, inspired James to transition to commentary. James's content has since involved to analysis on primarily YouTube drama and analysis of YouTube personalities. Examples of topics include Emma Chamberlain, James Charles, Slazo, Nikocado Avocado, Spill, and Alinity.
James also started a podcast with fellow YouTuber j aubrey, called "Susan's Boys".
Style[]
The videos that The Right Opinion is known for are his commentary videos regarding certain YouTubers. A notable distinction between his videos and those of other commentators is its massive runtime, usually ranging from 30 minutes to even a few hours; his video on Nikocado Avocado runs for over four hours of length. The sheer length of these videos stems from his long introduction, his touching on diverse sub-topics and extensive analysis and criticisms of video subjects. His writing style resembles an essay, although he uses ‘rhetorical devices … typically absent from a written piece'. His style has been compared to that of I Hate Everything.
James' videos are visually edited by a large team of friends and acquaintances that he regularly gives credit for. The videos are divided into subsections - one editor is assigned to each section. Stylistic features vary from editor to editor but typically have video-relevant footage, cinematic introductions, and quick, overlaid images. His videos are backed up by several sources that he collates and publishes - sometimes hundreds of sources are used, and a Google Doc is needed to present them. As a result of the effort needed to make each video, his schedule is typically once a month.
James is usually portrayed by a stylishly-dressed male avatar, accompanied by his distinctive English accent. Again, his avatar has been portrayed differently, even within the same video. His videos rarely feature his face.
Personal Life []
James is politically left-wing. He can also sing and play many instruments. He has made several serious and parody songs, including a Minecraft parody of Jake Paul's It's Everyday Bro, and songs "Morning Sun" and "Waiting for the End" under the name J-Dance. James is close friends with fellow commentators VanillaRice (with whom he shares ownership of a Discord) and James Marriott. He is a survivor of sexual assault, as revealed in his video about Slazo.
James is gay. He was once romantically involved with a fellow Youtuber named Just Jargon, as revealed in Just Jargon's 2019 recap video.[1]
Trivia[]
- James reveals his face two minutes into his video on TheBudday.
- An article posted on CNBC includes an interview from James that is prefaced by the author with a reveal of his real name. James calls this mistake out in his video on his fellow YouTube channel, Spill.
- Contrary to what the quote mentions, James does not have enough free time, presumably due to most of that time being used to make videos.
