Dr. Tom Nicholas (born March 1, 1993 (1993-03-01) [age 31])[citation needed] is an English[citation needed] YouTuber who makes videos about politics and culture.

Personal life[]

Tom has a PhD in theatre from the University of Exeter.[3][4] His thesis was on class and regionality in contemporary UK playwriting.[5] He has always been interested in politics, and has been involved in political campaigning.[6] Tom is named after his great grandfather.[7]

Tom’s first videos were PhD vlogs.

This is Tom’s channel for storing archives of his livestreams. As with his main channel, on his livestreams, he talks about a mixture of politics, culture and theory.[11]

Johnny Harris[]

On March 12, 2021, Tom uploaded Johnny Harris: A Story of YouTube Propaganda,[12] a response to Johnny HarrisHow China Became So Powerful,[13] Tom described this video as “frankly alarming,” especially because of “the behind-the-scenes reasons,” why it was made.[14] In his video, Harris discussed “stakeholder capitalism,” which involves corporations considering their impact on people and the environment.[15] At the end of his video, Harris announced that he partnered with the World Economic Forum, who pioneered stakeholder capitalism.[16]

Harris watched Tom’s video, and commented that it raised “useful points about ethics and journalism in a YouTube context.” He argued that he may disagree with Tom about “where the ethical line is in journalism.” Harris also stated that the video was the product of him having read a pre order copy of Stakeholder Capitalism, (a book by Peter Vanham and Klaus Schwab, the founder of the WEF) and pitching the WEF on sponsoring a video.[17] Harris stated that the WEF “didn’t have any creative or editorial influence,” over his video.[18]

Tom replied asking Harris how he obtained an advance copy of Stakeholder Capitalism, saying that it seemed “unlikely [the WEF were] sending out advance copies of books to YouTubers.” He pointed out that an amended version of the video script appeared on the WEF website, and that it features Harris and Peter Vanham as authors.[19] Tom stated that it might “seem convenient” that he happened to approach the WEF asking if they wanted to sponsor a video at just the right time for it to launch alongside the Davos Agenda PR campaign, a campaign where the WEF had specifically been looking to expand its reach on YouTube. After Harris confirmed that the WEF paid for his video, Tom asked why Harris did not use the “Contains Paid Promotion” banner required by YouTube’s terms of service and many countries.[20]
