Jacques Bermon Webster II (born: April 30, 1991), better known professionally as Travis Scott, is an American musician, rapper, songwriter, and record producer, who performs the genres of hip-hop, trap, psychedelic rap, and alternative hip-hop.
Personal life[]
Travis Scott was born on April 30, 1991, and grew up in Houston, Texas. From the age of one to six, he lived with his grandmother. Travis along with his family members are musicians. His dad was a drummer and his grandfather made jazz compositions.
Growing up in a middle-class household, he split time between Missouri City, a suburban area where he lived with his parents, and his grandmother's house in a higher-crime area of South Houston. These contrasting experiences would later influence his musical perspective. At just three years old, he was already playing the drums. By thirteen, he had progressed to producing his first songs.
Travis Scott had a tense relationship with his father, who restricted his access to musical equipment, leading to conflicts and even fistfights. His mother, the family's main provider, worked at AT&T. During this time, he used money meant for a plane ticket to New York to fund his pursuit of music in Los Angeles.
After graduating from Elkins High School, he briefly enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio before dropping out in his sophomore year to fully pursue his music career. This decision, though risky at the time, would prove to be pivotal in his journey to becoming a successful artist.
After dropping out of college, he released his debut mixtape, Owl Pharaoh (2013), followed by Days Before Rodeo (2014), which gained him recognition. His first studio album, Rodeo (2015), introduced hits like "Antidote" and showcased his unique sound.
He quickly followed up with Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (2016), which became his first Billboard 200 chart-topper. His third album, Astroworld (2018), solidified his superstar status, featuring the massive hit "Sicko Mode." In 2023, he released Utopia, continuing his streak of innovative music.
Controversy[]
2023 Nebula assault allegations[]
On March 1, 2023, Scott was performing at Nebula nightclub in New York City when a sound technician, Mark, asked him to lower the music. Scott responded by punching Mark in the head, causing him to need medical attention. Scott was found to be drinking alcohol and had damaged $12,000 in the club's sound equipment. The New York City Police Department issued a warrant for Scott's arrest on March 2, 2023.[1] The matter was resolved with a settlement, and the NYPD did not press any charges.[2]
