―True Geordie |
Brian Davis (born: January 26, 1987YouTuber from Newcastle upon Tyne, England. His name refers to the colloquial term "Geordie", a name associated with people from the Newcastle area.
), better known online as True Geordie (formerly known as FootballFan533), is an EnglishHe was originally known for uploading rants about his favorite football club Newcastle United, but has since become one of the most respected YouTube interviewers in his area, through his eponymously-named "True Geordie Podcast", hosted by himself and co-host Laurence McKenna.
About/YouTube History[]
True Geordie became well-known after his first video, titled "A True Geordie's view on Nile Ranger", went viral. The video featured Geordie himself ranting about then-Newcastle forward Nile Ranger after the striker came out and told the fans to "not bother turning up if they're going to boo". He quickly gained a following due to his expletive and passionate, yet honest, opinions, and therefore changed his channel name from FootballFan533 to True Geordie. Afterwards, he began uploading more regularly.
He now uploads a mixture of videos through his ever-growing "True Geordie Podcast", his series "True News", which involves himself and co-star Laurence McKenna, reacting to the latest viral videos on YouTube. They also host a weekly football livestream series calldd "The Kick Off".
Clips from the podcast are uploaded to Geordie's second channel, True Geordie Xtra (formerly known as TG2), which also features more boxing and MMA-based content. Similarly, "The Kick Off" also has its own channel and talking points from each live show, as well as previews to each gameweek, are uploaded.
Controversies[]
KSI vs Logan Paul 1 & 2[]
Geordie responded to Logan, pointing out his silence and lack of rebuttal to KSI during the conference. Geordie also stated he felt indifferent towards the Paul brothers and that he did not, in fact, hate them. Despite this, Geordie was nearly removed from commentating on the official KSI vs Logan Paul fight, which caused significant protest from the YouTube community. Many creators including Boogie2988 and Calfreezy voiced their support for him, and a petition was also launched, which garnered over 15,000 signatures.[1]
On July 30, 2018, after a phone call and a podcast between them, Geordie confirmed he indeed forgave Logan for all of his actions and they made peace over the debacle, even becoming friends.[2][3] Therefore, it was declared that Logan is officially reinstating him as the announcer for the KSI vs Logan Paul on August 25, 2018.[4]
Over a year later, when the rematch was announced, Geordie spoke with Laurence McKenna in his podcast about the fight and how the change from an amateur boxing match to a professional one will completely change the spectacle. Geordie was then introduced as the surprise host of the UK press conference by renowned boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, but later confirmed he would not be commentating the fight with either Sky Sports (UK) or DAZN (USA)[5], who held the rights for the pay-per-view, and instead, intended to host his own watch along on the night of the fight. Prior to the fight, Geordie had both fighters on his podcast, along with parts of their teams to discuss the fight.
Sexting Controversy[]
On August 19, 2019, A leaked screenshot appeared on Twitter of Geordie sexting to a woman via Instagram. Two of the messages included Geordie talking about owning a dildo and wanting the woman to defecate on his chest. As a result, this led to a widespread social media coverage in the UK and he began trending very quickly. Keemstar from DramaAlert took this opportunity to address the news, but received a lot of disapproval from viewers for invading his privacy.[6]
Clash Of Creators Comments[]
While True Geordie and Laurence McKenna watched the Clash of Creators, McKenna shared comments bashing everything about it, from the production value to disparaging remarks on the smaller creators who showed up that day. On JaackMaate's Happy Hour Podcast, he responded to McKenna's comments about Clash Of Creators, saying "I've got to say, he comes across as a bit of a prick in it, mate." JaackMaate also stated "It's a charity event that a fucking 16-year-old dreamt up and then you dedicated it to the memory of your fucking dad that passed away, you don't need to make shitty comments."[7]
Tyson Fury Interview[]
“ | I think you're a tosser. You little tosepot. And I won't be doing anymore interviews with you little tosspot, bearded, bald-headed tosser. Kiss my balls, you little wanker. You little shithouse. Suck a dick. | ” |
―Tyson Fury's rant at True Geordie.[8] |
Islamophobic Comments[]
“ | There are very few people I personally dislike, one of them is True Geordie. He's very insulting, fat, vulgar, he's a dickhead, and an unlikeable person. He's not very smart, he's stupid... Now after me converting to Islam, he made a piece on one of his podcasts saying I'm not true in my conversion, and then insulted all Muslims. Making fucking racist comments about an entire religion as if that's somehow funny. Let me tell you something my friend, and True Geordie if you are watching this, this is a message directly to you. There are certain times in life when you need to know when to shut the fuck up. There are certains things that are not funny, certain things that are not beyond reprisal... But to insult my religion, and the religion of billions of people across the fucking planet, making ignorant jokes about blowing ourselves up, thinking it's gonna go without consequence, you're gonna learn very quickly, my friend, that was a mistake. | ” |
―Andrew Tate's response to True Geordie.[9] |
Despite his apology, which was met with mixed reception, brands like Gymshark[10] and PokerStars[11] have distanced themselves with Geordie, ending their working relationship and cutting all ties with him.[12][13][14]
“ | We do not agree with the comments made by Brian, AKA True Geordie, and have suspended our relationship with him indefinitely, effective immediately. | ” |
―Gymshark's statement on True Geordie.[15] |
“ | We have terminated our contract with True Geordie with immediate effect. At PokerStars, we are committed to making poker as inclusive and accessible as possible, and do not tolerate any comments or attitudes that don't align with our inclusive values. | ” |
―PokerStars' statement on True Geordie.[16] |
“ | I wanted to take some time to digest everything that's gone on before commenting. I see all the DMs/tweets. I was obviously disappointed by the comments - I hadn't seen them until the viral clip. I thought I'd wait for an apology for what I hoped was a really bad "joke". The apology that did follow as we saw wasn't great. I was friends with Brian before TKO so this whole episode has been a bit confusing for me personally. He has since reached out which I appreciate. I genuinely don't think Brian is a bad person at heart, he's just made a mistake. We all make mistakes at some point - the way it has been handled throughout though has been poor. Ultimately, I've made the decision to step back from my position on The Kick Off. | ” |
―Adam McKola's announcement of leaving The Kick Off.[17] |
“ | I have taken the time out the last few days to just come to terms with how much my words have upset people. The first step was to just listen to all of you, all the tweets, the comments, the messages, my friends, and just to communicate with as many people as I could who were affected by my comments on the livestream. I want to do better. I know for some of you out there, I'm a role model, and I want to try to set the best example I possibly can for you. I know I was wrong, and I want to stand up, not hideaway. And I want you to see that. I'm truly sorry for what I said. And it is not acceptable. So here's what I promised to do, I want to continue to speak to my friends, create as members of the Muslim community on an off camera, to understand how my comments hurt them, and how similar comments have hurt them in the past. To learn from that, and to try and be better. I want to use these videos to speak to as many of you as I can and show that I've listened and I understand your pain. And hopefully, we can build some positive conversations from this, I have to work on myself, I have to be better improve the way I think. And I am working on that. | ” |
―True Geordie's second response to the controversy[18] |
Feud with Conor McGregor[]
On May 24, 2023, Geordie uploaded a video titled "Conor McGregor’s WORRYING Interviews…" where he reacted to Conor McGregor interview with Ariel Helwani.[19] McGregor posted a voice note on Twitter telling Brian to ‘keep my name out of your mouth’ after he released a video criticising McGregor’s behaviour in interviews.[20] On 31 May, Brian responded to McGregor by calling him out for a charity MMA or boxing match.[21]
