Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is an American mixed martial arts promotion company based in Las Vegas. It is the largest MMA promotion company in the world and hosts events worldwide.

History[]

UFC was founded in 1993 by entrepreneur Art Davie after seeing videos of the prominent Brazilian martial arts family The Gracies defeat multiple Asian disciplines of MA using Brazilian jiu-jitsu. UFC was founded to have multiple different disciplines of MA around the world compete against each other.

UFC's first event, later renamed UFC 1, aired on television in November 1993 and featured kickboxers, karate experts, Brazilian jiu-jitsu experts, wrestlers, and more. The event was a success and brought MMA into the mainstream.

However the violent nature of MMA was initially controversial in the 90s. Because MMA was less theatrical than WWE, the primary combat sport broadcast in the US then, it was seen as harmful to the general public and encourages violence among children and teens. Multiple states enacted laws that censored UFC broadcasts in the 90s and forced multiple relocations of events. In response, UFC worked with multiple state athletic commissions and modified the rules and presentation of their events to better fit the American palette at the time. Eventually, as UFC and MMA in general became more prevalent over the years, UFC events have became less controversial although the company does censor more graphic fights and injuries.

In 2001, the sports promotion company Zuffa brought UFC and placed Dana White as the company's president. Zuffa's purchase and White's stewardship is credited with UFC's further success and eventual becoming the biggest MMA promotion company 10 years later. White is still the current president of UFC.
