Vevo, stylized as either VEVO or vevo, is a video hosting service that caters to musicians and the music industry as a whole. The service operates on its own site, vevo.com, as well as on YouTube, with each music artist creating their own channel with the word Vevo somewhere in the channel name, usually at the end.

Launched on December 8, 2009, the Vevo service is owned and operated by four companies, Universal Music Group (UMG), Google, Sony Music Entertainment (SME) and Abu Dhabi Media. Two of the biggest music companies, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, release the music produced by them to the Vevo service, whilst Warner Music Group doesn't and instead has formed an alliance with rival Viacom Media Networks (originally MTV Media Networks).

Vevo is currently available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Due to licensing issues, the service has not been able to go worldwide yet, a goal they attempted to reach in 2010. However, a majority of the videos can be watched outside of these countries through YouTube, unless a video has been blocked in a country, displaying the message "The uploader has not made this video available in your country."

Vevo is also available for a range of platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows 8, Fire OS, Google TV, Apple TV, Boxee, Roku and Xbox 360.

History[]

Vevo was originally designed to be the Hulu of music videos, attempting to be a free, ad-less broadcaster of music videos, hoping to attract more high-end advertisers. Revenue sources come from their merchandise store and referral links to purchased purchased songs on Amazon MP3 and iTunes.

The domain name for vevo.com was acquired on 20 November 2008. SME eventually reached a deal with UMG to add it's content in June 2009 and the Vevo website finally launched on December 8, 2009 and in that same month became the most visited music site in the US.[1]

In June 2012, Vevo launched its Certified awards, which honours artists with at least 100 million video views on Vevo and its partners (including YouTube) through special features on the Vevo website.[2]

Since it's creation, many different "shows" have been added, including Vevo Certified which honours some of the biggest artists around the world, Vevo Lift which spotlights some of the up and coming artists, Lyric Lines where people try to pick up guys/girls using only song lyrics, among many other shows such as Vevo Presents and Hot this Week.

Merge[]

In 2018, YouTube announced that they will be merging VEVO channels and artist channels to make it simpler to find artists channels.[3]

Hacking[]

In April 2018, Vevo's YouTube channel was hacked by two hackers using the name of Prosox and Kuroi'SH and caused the renaming of many videos and the deletion of the most viewed YouTube video at the time, "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi.

Channel[]

On April 14, 2006, VEVO created their YouTube channel. The first video was uploaded on December 31, 2009, titled "These Are The Breaks".[4] VEVO usually uploads music content.

Vevo TV[]

On March 12, 2013, Vevo TV was launched and is currently only available in North America & UK. The service is an ad-supported internet television channel running 24 hours a day and plays blocks of music-videos as well as specials that Vevo creates. Vevo shut down the service during the first half of 2016 as part of a site-wide redesign.[5]

  • VEVO used to be the most viewed YouTube channel of all time, having 110B+ views at the time. It was also the first channel to reach 10B and 100B views.[7]
