The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is an American professional basketball league. It is composed of 12 teams, all based in the United States.
History[]
The NBA Board of Governors approved the creation of the WNBA on April 24, 1996,[1] with representatives from Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes in attendance.[2]
The WNBA began its first season on June 21, 1997, following the 1996 USA Basketball Women's National Team's gold medal run at the Summer Olympic Games. The first game featured the New York Liberty against the Los Angeles Sparks, televised nationally on NBC.
On May 23, 2000, the Houston Comets became the first WNBA team to be invited to the White House Rose Garden, marking a significant milestone in sports history. Before this invitation, only men's sports teams had travelled to the White House.
