Jamell Maurice Demons (born: May 1, 1999 (1999-05-01) [age 26]), better known professionally as YNW Melly, is an American rapper and singer known for his music. He is currently in custody in a Florida jail, awaiting his retrial for a double murder case

Life[]

Demons was born on May 1, 1999, and grew up in Gifford, Florida. He has a younger brother, Brandon Hunter King, better known professionally as YNW BSlime, who is also a rapper.

Demons started posting his songs on SoundCloud when he was 15. In 2015, he was arrested for shooting at a group of students near a high school. He was subsequently convicted of aggravated battery, discharging a firearm in public, and two counts of aggravated assault, for which he served several months in prison.

Career[]

Demons adopted the stage name "YNW Melly" in 2016. YNW (an initialism of "Young N**** World" or "Young New Wave") is a hip-hop collective that included Demons, Anthony "YNW Sakchaser" Williams, Christopher "YNW Juvy" Thomas Jr., and Cortlen "YNW Bortlen" Henry.

In 2017, while still incarcerated, Demons released his first project, an EP called Collect Call, which contained features from numerous well-known artists, including Lil B and John Wicks. In 2018, he released the singles "Virtual (Blue Balenciagas)", "Melly the Menace", and "Slang That Iron". Other singles include "4 Real", "Butter Pecan", and "Medium Fries".

In August 2018, he released his debut mixtape I Am You, which later appeared on the Billboard 200 at number 192 in January 2019.

In January 2019 he released the mixtape we all shine which featured artists like Kanye West and Fredo bang.

Demons released the studio album Melly vs Melvin while incarated, it peaked at number 8 on the billboard 200 and featured hit singles like suicidal and 223.

In 2021 while incarated demons released his second studio album just a matter of slime which featured artists like young thug, Lil Uzi vert and Kodak Black, it received mixed reviews from critics.

In 2024 demons family released his third studio album ynw4life. Demons had no involvement in making the album due to having his phone privileges taken away in jail, it features vocals Melly recorded in 2019 for unused songs, Melly appears on 8 of the 11 songs, the album received negative reviews and failed to chart.

Demons created his channel on March 9, 2017, and he uploaded his first video on March 10, 2017. He uploads music videos and audio to his channel, and eventually uploaded some of his younger brother's music videos there.

Drug Addiction[]

On january 3rd 2019 demons was arrested for marijuana and was released on bond, his smiling mug shot went viral.[1]

Shooting of Garry Chambliss[]

On February 22, 2019, music website Complex reported that Demons and Henry were suspects in the fatal 2017 shooting of deputy Garry Chambliss in Gifford. In April 2020, henry was released on 100k bond, demons contracted covid in jail and attempted to get bond to be released from jail but the judge denied it.[2]

In November, Demon's trial was set for March 7, 2022. The trial was later delayed and set for May 23, 2022. Delayed again, the trial was pushed back until June 6, 2022. After the trial did not proceed, Demon's team decided to submit a speedy trial request on May 26, 2022. The trial would have to commence in the next 175 days. On July 6, 2022, it was announced that Demons would no longer face capital punishment if convicted. However, on November 9, 2022, the decision was overruled by an appellate judge, once again making Demons eligible for capital punishment if sentenced.[3]

Double murder[]

On February 12, 2019, Demons was charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder in connection with October 2018 shooting deaths he committed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida of two YNW associates described as his close friends, rappers YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy. Authorities claimed that Demons conspired with YNW rapper Cortlen Henry (YNW Bortlen) to stage the double-murder of Williams (YNW Sakchaser) and Thomas Jr. (YNW Juvy) and make it appear as if they were fatally injured in a drive-by shooting. Henry allegedly drove the victims to the hospital where they later succumbed to their wounds.[4] Demons turned himself in on February 13, 2019, announcing on his Instagram:

"No I did not get locked up in Washington , but I am turning myself in today... a couple months ago I lost my two brothers by violence and now the system want to find justice.. unfortunately a lot of rumors and lies are being said but no worries god is with me and my brother @ynw.bortlen and we want y'all to remember it's a ynw Family I love you"

In a Instagram posted to demons Instagram in 2022 by his family, it says demons got his phone privileges taken away in the Broward county jail and could no longer contact his family, friends or music producers, his mother put a change.org petition in 2023 saying demons should have his phone privileges back and saying how the Broward county is ruining his son's mental health by isolating him in a jail cell

In June 2023, demons double murder trial began, after three weeks the trial resulted in a mistrial, On October 7th demons and Henry were charged with witness tampering and Henry was sent back to jail. On October 20th 2023 demons was denied bond and remains incarcerated. his retrial is currently scheduled for September 10th, 2025.
